Is it unusual if i don't have one at all? I have the check light panel up top but no OBC. I thought it was strange since every other old bmw I've messed around with had one, but I was glad i didn't have one everyone I've ever seen was garbage.

Wondering if you've verified the main relay as being correct with two 87 pins.

Yes. It is a five pin relay. Would I have power everywhere else down the line if it was the wrong one?

edit: I just re-read that and i realize that might not sound like real question, but it is. I wasn't trying to be an A-hole or anything. I really appreciate all the input.

No worries. So looking at the 84 ETM for the main relay, I see one 87 pin powering the ECU at pins 18 & 35 and the other 87 pin powering the fuel pump relay coil at pin 86 and all of the injectors. So if you're confident that you have power to all of the above with ignition on, then we're good.

Also, can you give us an idea of your experience level with mechanical and electrical systems. Have you downloaded the ETM for your car yet?

I'm learning is about all I can say about that. I have a decent understanding of how the motor and all of it's components work. I've been learning how the electrical systems work for the past two months while my car has been down. When i started studying I began at the basics of electricity and worked my way up so my physical experience is minimal but I understand the concept. I'm a pretty fast learner when I need to be and I'm not afraid to dive in and try something. I am good with a wrench though, plenty of experience as a machinist. I did download the ETM. I can follow it but to apply it to the car would take a minute. I'm getting more comfortable with a VOM but still lack knowledge to figure out what to test for on my own. I hope that helps give you an idea.

I didn't get anywhere on the car itself this weekend but me and my buddies found a garage to rent that is closer to my house and a lot more accessible for my work schedule. I will be able to work on it more often as soon as i get it towed which should be by the end of the week.

Oh I will. I will probably be living on forums and such for the foreseeable future. We are doing a swap on my buddy's e30 and trying to revive my other friends e21. Not to mention the p.i.t.a. MK4 jetta VR6, and B5 Audi that have endless problems. We will be busy that's for sure.

Cool. Your buddy doesn't happen to have an e30 heater box lying around? Having blended air in the e28 would be tits.

I don't have the code function on my OBC because my OBC is just a clock, and doesnt work anyway. My starter just started acting normal again after the second try cranking it. I did decide to take alot of stuff off the car since i have my own garage now. Hopefully that will clear up the engine bay a little bit so i can start testing some circuits or however you say it.

I did notice and this is the BIG question: Key in on position relays click and everything seems normal, turn headlights on fuel pump starts buzzing loudly. Why? I can't make sense of it. Has anyone ever even heard of this? How would this happen?

I was pretty tired when i found this so i just walked away and moped, but i should be going back tonight after work and checking it all out again. Who knows maybe i missed something obvious. I will continue to search until i'm dead or someone wants to pay the ridiculous amount of money it will take for me to let go of it.

Is there any sort of internal switch in the starter that could cause a no spark while still cranking? Someone looked at it and asked if my starter relay was bad and i don't think i have one being a 5 speed. There are a couple symbols on the ETM in the starter motor that aren't explained, one is a circle with an M in it and im confused about it only showing two connections on the starter but there actually being 3. I know there is one that is not used but the strap that comes out of the starter motor and mounts to the silenoid, what is it?

SOLVED!!! It is pretty frustrating actually, but i put a different set of relays in (not sure if that was a problem) and i tried to crank it and the positive baterry terminal caught on fire! So I cleaned up the terminal a little better and opened up the fuse box and WOAH! the battery cables were just flying around all willy nilly in there. So I found the little nut sitting in the bottom of the fuse box and fastened it all back together now im just back to my crappy idle at start, but im ready to throw parts at it now just to throw parts at it and have some spares for pretty much everything. Thanks for the help and everything I'll probably be starting another post soon about my complete lack of power steering.
