Interesting that the title of the pic is "fill plug with blue dot". I don't have any good advice for you, and I haven't seen one of these up close, but it looks like the plug that appears to be in the standard position is some kind of grub screw that's not intended to come out easily. The clock stamp on the gearbox in the pic you found looks like it may be 1983? What's yours say? All the other 280 pics I see via google for E28 and E24 M cars show a different profile to the bellhousing. Could yours and the one you posted the pic of be an early version, or a later version like an E34? Is there a VIN tag on it? I believe there should be. Part number?

I will look later tonight. I think the bimmer forums pic is a g280 from an e34 M5. Might explains the slight difference.

Well, the for sale ad in that link is for an E34 M5 gearbox... Zooming at the clock stamp says it was manufactured in Nov 89. It would be worth checking yours. If yours is the later box, the "blue dot plug" is the fill.

Ok, looked again and... No clock stamp! Meaning a reman gearbox?

Part number stamped on the left hand side is 260.0.1302.91, which doesn't come up on the real OEM pn search.

I have used a wheel bolt with a couple of nuts on it and a 17mm wrench with good success.

Damn, that's smart. I had to scour the shop I did it at for a short 17mm allen head wrench.

There are some mixed opinions in this thread but no definitive answers, and there is a reason for that (all of the above were right). I posted on the Facebook E28 group and got some clarification. Pictures are courtesy of 1st 5er.

G280 out of a 11/87 M5. 17mm female allen.


G280 out of a 91 M5. This is the one I have in my car, and hence why i was so confused.

This would have been nice to know before welding a wrench onto the shear plug to remove it!! I replaced it with a 17 mm allen like the early version. This was a PITA. I guess i have a E34 M5 trans in my car??

Both of my G280's - one e28 5/87 build and one e34 3/92 build - have the big plug and shear plug as shown on the '91 M5 picture above. Maybe someone replaced the plug on my e28 at some point? That seems unlikely....

Interesting information contained in this thread. Can either plug be used if you have both? I assume my earlier 280 has the hex head plug (red circle) in the adapter but I have always used the Allen socket plug (green arrow) in the side to fill. My question is does one allow more or less fluid into the trans or are they at the same level. I have always filled mine with the car slightly elevated on the passenger side in order to put a little extra fluid in, about 1.75 quarts. I had read where that was recommended or maybe Jim Blanton told me to do that. I've been doing it that way on all our Getrags... unnecessary?
