Actually, a well sorted 524td may be a better base candidate, now that I think about it. I was actually plucked from an apocalyptic scene by a 524td. (And the driver of said machine, thanks Kyle) Diesel was the only fuel available. There were lines for gasoline, and we pulled up to the diesel pump. Some broad jumped out of the gasoline line and pulled up behind us. We warned her not to put "gas" from this particular pump in her honda.

How about jacking it up and putting a heavy duty coil over kit on it? Runflat tires or the smallest "e" load range tires you can find. 4.10 LS rear end. A solid hitch receiver. A winch mounted on a hitch. One of those badass BMW oil pan guards. Take off the p/s rearview mirror for more clearance. Put an air compressor where the a/c compressor is. Mount a small tank in the trunk. Clad the (US) bumpers in wood for pushing shit out of the way. Fabricate some sort of radiator guard. Why not ballistic glass? Store supplies and medical kit under rear seat. Lots of unused space there. The trunk is huge, so I don't see a need for a roofrack. Extra fuel would be nice. There's a BMW jerry can that fits under the spare. I believe there's another auxiliary tank out there as well.

Homing in on what my wagon is going to look like. Kind of wish it was 4WD, but that would mean an auto trans or a 6 cylinder instead of this 8.
The only one I'd seen in this country that was remotely affordable was a rustbucket auto. I'll just wait a few more years and import one I suppose, or wait for an X3 with a stick to get rolled and take its drivetrain.
