What an awesome story. This really inspires me to keep my next e28 forever. Keep it on the road and running and no matter what your day looks like, it picks up your mood in about 4 seconds.
Outstanding video and I love that you've had the car since brand new. I envy those of you that have had these cars since brand new ( Rod Paine, Randy, whoever else out there...) I wasn't even conceived before the first one came off the boat from Germany.
And the MUSIC that car makes when you throttle it! Holy hell!! I would get exactly 3mpg because my foot would never let up if that's what I got to hear everytime!

I just watched this on Jalopnik, and immediately had to come here to see if it was posted yet. I have to say, very few videos have moved me as much as this has. I bought my E28 as my first car that I owned, and have owned it now for about 5 years. It has been an integral part of my life, and has caused many things to happen, both good and bad, that have generally made my life more interesting. Soon, I will (finally) be in the financial position to finally buy something that won't constantly need work or cause me trouble, and yet I hesitate to do so. I am looking at W220 S65s and E60 M5s, but with a strange feeling in the back of my mind. Nothing else I've ever driven has ever felt quite like my car. I know it needs lots of work, and while this is incredibly frustrating, it also makes me realize how much better it would be if it was finally fully restored, and upgraded in the way I wanted it to be. The connection I feel to this thing is I suspect a lot like the way you feel about your M5...like a friend that is always there for you, and is always capable of putting a smile on your face. And nothing looks quite like it. Unreal video, your car is perfect, and I love what you've done with it. And you've got my favorite wheels! One question...actually two. First, what shift knob are you using? I love it. Second...how did you find yourself in the position to finance a $50k car in 1989? Very impressive.

The folks at Petrolicious just released a new video covering the BMW brand. According to the video production company, in 1989, Randy Balingit-Hartmann bought the first BMW M5 brought to San Diego and has owned it ever since. As someone on the shy side, Randy wanted a car that fit his personality—one that was fast and powerful yet unassuming.
In all its unassuming four-door glory the E28 M5 is often overlooked, but this sedan packs the same amount of power as Ferrari 308 GT and if not respected will surprise you in the turns of your favorite road. Randy has held onto this car through the ups and downs of life and has put over 400,000 miles on it with no major problems.

Awesome video, and I agree that focusing on the car and your relationship to it "made" the video. That said though, I'm curious about what mods you have actually done to the S38 and all...
Oh, and wasn't it 1987 instead of 1989? I recall test driving the M5 in the Spring of 1987 at my local dealer back then in Manassas, VA (Apple BMW). By 1989, there were left-over E28 M5s on dealer lots that were hard to sell due to the introduction of the E34...at least in Charlotte NC at that time, Hendrick BMW had a black interior one for sale for many months, discounted again and again well into 1989.
