I daily drive a 2005 F250 4x4 with 6.0 PSD, but I have a 2wd 1999 F250 7.3 m/t at home as a backup. Its quite handy to have two.

I can honestly say one thing that is contrary to most internet rumors. The 6.0 has been a great truck to me. Hauls anything, has abundant power after some "tweaks", and is the most comfortable vehicle to drive long distances that I've ever owned. And I've owned a lot of vehicles, including a Tacoma and Tundra. The 6.0 can be very expensive to own if you don't do your own maintenance/repairs, and things do break. However, the repairs are mostly predictable. EGR coolers and oil coolers fail, though the EGR cooler is easily eliminated. ;) If these fail and are ignored, head gaskets are next in line. Injectors get sticky, and need replacement, especially if oil changes are delayed. All it takes is some preventative mods and regular maintenance and they are good engines. The 7.3 with the stick is also a stellar truck, and it has never failed me. They are legendary engines for good reason, very simple and very reliable. It also will return nearly 20 mpg on the highway without trouble. Try that with a new diesel truck. I plan to keep it as long as I feasibly can. Great truck. Which would I choose if there was an apocalypse? The 7.3 of course. However, Ford buyers will have to get used to the newer crop of "smog diesels" and their shitty fuel consumption for the time being, as people are petrified of buying the 6.0, the 6.4 PSD is even worse, and the newest 7.3 is now 10 years old.

This picture says a lot:

I want to test drive a new 6.7 PSD, but am afraid I would like it too much. That can wait until I wear the current one out.

At least you're not driving a jacked up , fire engine red F 350 4 by with twin 6 " chrome stacks . Like the overcompensating small thingus mook blocking me in the twisties whilst driving a rental Altima. Nobody buys that much chrome who isnt living the dream. ;)

I currently drive a Ford Ranger. My last truck was a Ranger, not very happy that 2011 was the last model year or the Ranger :(
I had my last Ranger 12 years and I only got rid of it to buy another with 4X4. Sold it with the original battery still kicking under the hood.

And thank you for the Ranger Forum link! I am going to register on the site today. How about Motronic as a username? NAH! :rotz:
Haha they wouldn't get it. Those guys are like the mye28 guys here. They're obsessed with them and know them well. I miss my 99 xlt four banger 5 speed. :)

You're making me feel better about the 6.0. The trucks are great, but the engine has always scared me off. Maybe I'll look at one that is later and we'll taken care of. I'll probably just get another 7.3 though.

6.0 longevity recipe:

Head Studs with Ford gaskets
EGR Delete Kit with new Up Pipe
Full 4" turbo back exhaust
Tuner with PROVEN conservative tune
Coolant filtration kit
FPR mod with 60 psi spring and healthy factory pump
Replace every engine sensor you can think of, within reason, like base-lining an M30.

I would do the studs/gaskets, but its a real pain and mine were done at the dealer with OE parts sorta recently and show no signs of impending doom. I've done everything else listed and it runs like a top and returns reasonable mileage for such a huge beast.

Funny thing is that the 7.3 has none of these issues to deal with. The FPR spring, tuner, and exhaust is all I've really done to it mechanically and its the awesome.

The plug at the bottom of the Ram's differential, that you would remove in order to drain the diff, was a rubber stopper. After a couple years it would harden, shrink and start weeping.
That's actually wrong. The dodge did have a rubber plug, but it was the fill, not the drain. You had to either pull the cover or suck the fluid out of the fill to drain it. I know, I had one.

Does the 6.0 have cavitation issues in the cooling system? I know it can happen in the 7.3.

Ford-trucks.com lists tons of mods for the 7.3, but like you say, none are to protect from failure, just to make it better.

I'm actually a Nissan guy, but I did love my 69 Stepside 4x4, an Ex-Colorado Fire Service Truck.

350 4 Speed with Granny Gear.
You could put it in 1st Gear and get out of the truck and walk beside it...

That's the truck I want to use to run over black people that wear black clothes while jaywalking across poorly lit streets in the middle of the night.

I totally want to name a kid Afaik.

Not my kid - someone else's kid. I don't want a kid. So, just call me up and I'll pronounce your kid "Afaik."

Talk about born on the No Fly List.

Good name for an album there.

Dodge Cummins here! I had 2 of them in the US and now my brother has a "like new" 93 first gen Cummins.

The Cummins doesn't need explanation, we all know it is the best pickup engine ever. The 12v has shit loads of torque down low where the V8's not even have half of it's torque and I've seen them with 900.000mls without a rebuilt.

Only downside is the truck itself...... They fall in pieces waaayyyy before that....

But still my favorite!! Can't beat the looks of a first gen Cummins!

My favorite trucks (by looks) of all time are the '78-'79 Fords and first gen Cummins trucks.

Looked like a MKIII Golf. I hang with a shit load of VW guys/girls here in VB. Buddy of mine is building a MKI Rabbit with a MKIV 1.8T engine/tranny and MKIV dash.

Cactus wrote:Why the eff would you want a vehicle that big? Here's something I genuinely never understood about trucks, why are they all so damn tall? They've got tailgate steps and grab handles on a lot of new trucks, why not just make the damn thing lower. You don't lose any of the bed capacity, because most trucks have wheel wells intruding into bed space anyway. I'm looking out at the parking lot at work, and the only truck that doesn't have that problem is a stake-bed with a 5th wheel.

This is my choice: Image
Love that O2 based one. :D

On height, trucks weren't always as tall as they are now, partly for more suspension travel for a cushier ride, and partly just styling, lots of people buy them for image and bigger is better. Older trucks would carry a lot, but would ride so hard they would rattle your fillings out. New ones are boat like in comparison.

I have a '66 Ford F-100. Parked all by itself it looks pretty big, but if I'm in traffic next to a modern pickup I feel like I'm driving a Mini. :)

Needs work. Parts are unobtanium. Gonna be a blast, and then ill be twerkin down the road.

Also, '70s Mazda Rotary trucks are cool and qwirky. And in an ideal world, Land Rover 130 Truck would be killer.

1992 Ford F150 XLT SWB Lariat 4x4, tow package, every option. Purchased new in '92. Everything works. 180,000 miles. In the snow every year at Tahoe. Many summers spent off road in Baja. Now my daily driver. After 21 years, a very good investment. No regrets. Reliable. Will not sell...ever.

Ford F150 FTW.
