There is none but they are very uncommon. Really manual HVAC makes little difference since it is all still vacuum operated. The difference is that there are fewer electronics but its still a pain in the ass. Mine worked when I bought it, then for two miles while I drove it. It didn't work until Greg bought it and it has apparently worked fine ever since. Still a nightmare.

Its not really the vacuum pods that are so bad, its the early version of what became the IHKA in the E32. It controls the HVAC 'programming' and the circuitry and moving parts get dirty and just dont work any more.

I had the smaller version of the black spoked Nardi in a 2002 for a while. Sold it and replaced it with a Momo Prototipio. It does change the look.

Just trying to be helpful . I wonder if there is a fix/retrofit for the E23. I have always thought I might like to buy another but I live in FL and cannot do the no ac thing.

Can't say I have and I don't think I've ever noticed a practice while driving.

Well, in my sample of two it was always just the vacuum motors that were a problem, the electronics and the rest always worked as well as it was designed to.

I know, how silly of me to think I know better how much air of what temperature I want in a specific area than the control system does.

It's temperamental at times. The heat and defrost always work fine. Occasionally the AC vents will default to the defroster vents, but if I select the floor vents or defrost and let it run from them for a few minutes, I can then select the dash vents and all works well.

Regardless, the temp control works well.
