I hit the wall after 11 years and 155K miles. I was bored, I wanted something else, I wanted quieter and a shimmy free front end.

If I had it to do over, I'd have B35'd it, bought a new muffler, installed the big brakes I had, replaced the window guides, install Mooseheads bushings and still be driving it. Oh well. But in stock form it was done. Everything worked. Which is more than I can say for the E36.

I've been DDing the poor thing for seven years, 254k and climbing. And I still enjoy doing so.


That could be 'cause the other ride is a '80 Yota RWD with a flatbed, and I barely fit inside there.

I dd'd my 533 for a while, but as a work truck, it just wasn't reliable enough. My fault, I didn't accept the $2,000 rule...

I dd my wagon though, and even work out of it at times. I do feel a tad silly pulling up to a job site in it.

I've put 20,000 miles on it since I've gotten it, and it's getting healthier everyday

Does it count if I DD the E28 from April to December, and only use it for ice racing in the winter?

Mine is definitely too nice to DD, but it's only an ETA. I have been having the tendency to not wash it so that I don't get so many comments on it. When it's clean, the shine is blinding. It's nice to get a compliment once in awhile but now I understand how an attractive woman feels when EVERYONE is always telling her how nice she looks. It gets old pretty quickly...

I do wish it blended in more, but now that every car looks like a jelly bean, that just isn't possible. The good news is that if you told me I had to drive to California tomorrow, I'd check the tire pressures, top off the fluids, and blast away. No concerns whatsoever about driving it anywhere at any time in any weather or traffic for any distance. It is as reliable as my prior two E28s - meaning reliable to a fault.

There's only one problem. The car has 99,998 miles on it, so it is going to lose its innocence on Tuesday evening when I drive it to my orchestra rehearsal in Manhattan. I put off this moment as long as possible, but the car was meant to be driven. Driven and driven and driven. *sniff*

Love it.

I DD it about 1/2 to a 1/4 of the time. I love driving the 533 but i love my suburban too. Then some times it's nice to drive a completely quiet car, which is the wife's lexus that is also the only car with working a/c at the moment. But for my answer i just love driving a big American v8 that sucks up the gas

GF DD's her '88 535is though, with a bad cam and all.

After 12 years, I finally decided I needed a change. That and as it approached 300,000 miles, it was starting to need things and lose fuel economy. It was time to let someone else fall in love the E28; so I employed the "catch and release" ideal.

The E39 was a nice step up. For the same reasons as stated by a few, the other E28 is on a limited mileage collectors policy. And in Los Angeles, I'm paranoid about driving the M535 out on the open streets too much (I like my BBS's too much to subject them to our deplorable streets right now).

I have used mine as a DD for the past 4 years. It's a blast to drive but getting pretty miserable to drive daily. I have a e46 that I'm rebuilding that will be my future DD.

I've DD'ing e28's for going on 7 or 8 years now. (Do I get a hat or something??)

I love them all, even eta's and automatics. A 4 speed auto eta though, wow.

There's certain problems I've ignored to "fix later" but its always superficial stuff electrics, window seals, brake lights, bumpers falling off.

I've never actually sat down to figure out how much money has been spent in comparison to a new car, but every day I get behind the wheel of an e28 I feel like the smartest guy I know. What can I say, I'm surrounded by morons.

Rust and collision damage have killed my e28's, not mechanicals.

Not to mention it stands out in the high school parking lot (soon to be the Cal Poly main lot in September) .

I don't DD mine because 1) it's not done yet and 2) the company I work for gives me a nice 2012 Chevy truck to drive.

So even when the car is done it will get driven in th evenings or weekends.

Perhaps rather than asking us if we DD our E28s... maybe we should ask what car we would be GIVEN in order to give up driving our E28s every day:
1. new Chevy truck
2. E39
3. any company car that someone else is paying for
4. a Cadillac combination-of-letters
5. a new 5er

For me, having a lovely E39 wouldn't do it, although I enjoy the E39 when I have to drive it. The only vehicle that could possibly get me out of my E28 would be a new 5er, but even then, I'd still want both.

I think only #3 would tempt me away from driving my 528e. I can't think of a better all around car. Are there more efficient ways to get to work? Sure, I could ride the bus or my bike. Does the wind noise bother me? Not really, I always have the windows down. Is there anything as fun to drive? Probably. And there's the rub

Guess I'll keep on keeping on, who knows what the future brings?

I do, and it shows!, Over 300,000 and still kinda going. It is also my junk yard runner.

Sure, Chris didn't drive it enough but at the same time its nice, 14x,xxx original miles, and I love and worry about it a lot. I can see a shitty 2wd Toyota pickup or motorcycle taking over daily duties soon.
