There were only 2 options in 1988.

Heated seats
Metallic paint.

Everything else was standard.

The 88 ix also cost the same as a new m3 at the time.

They also had different gears in the differentials - manual cars were 3.91, auto cars were 4.10. When I first got the automatic car I thought for a while about swapping all the good bits off of the other car, but then I realized what a colossal amount of work it would be.
Speaking of BMW x-cars, one of the things I dislike most about our X5 manual is the 4.10 final drive. Most times it's easiest to just start out in 2nd gear rather than tick off the guy driving behind you with an abrupt pause in acceleration when shifting from 1st to 2nd. That said, the 4.10 gears do come in very handy when pulling something; I borrowed a trailer to pick up some landscape rock last month, and the low gear was just about perfect for starting out from a stop with a ton of rock in it.

What I wouldn't give for a hi/lo transfer case on it...

Base price of $33k back then: http://strictlyeta.net/articles/325ix_5.jpg That works out to about $64k in today's money.
