Will go have a look at it today if the seller is available. Any e12 issues I should look for?
RUST!!!! Its a major issue with e12's and even in the pictures you can tell this car has its share of it. Looks like the rust stains may be bleeding through the carpet on the drivers side too.
i know for $700 you're not gonna be worried with cosmetic rust, but these like to rust out structurally and be unsafe to drive.
I've parted e12's and e12 based e24's before because of undercarriage rust.
if the floor pans are particularly rusty, they like to eat at the unibody crossmembers on the front. They can quickly become unsafe if this happens so it would benefit you to look under the car at the floors, and also in the shock towers for rust.
the back bumper is definitely pushed in pretty good too
if it looks safe though, i'd say its a buy at $700. even if its unsafe if you need parts of it it could be worth it.

Up for sale is this excellent example of a nice BMW E28, a 1987 535is with a mere, all original, 143k miles on it. It has a clean TN title and has never been wrecked. This one is the top of the line model with every option available for that year including, power windows, power door locks, dual power seats, power mirrors, premium sound, Kenwood cd player with iPhone and aux connects, moonroof, the sport seats in the front, rear trunk lip spoiler, etc. Air conditioning blows cold, and heat blows hot. Engine is a the 3.5 v6 and runs excellent with plenty of power. Automatic transmission as well with sport and economy modes.
Exterior is in great shape and still shines. Interior is in even better condition as well, no cracks in the dash and odometer still works! This E28 is one of the nicest around town! The car currently sits on the original 15"s and the Yakima rack will not be included.

0ne of only 300 e34 M5s brought to North America in 1993. 93 models had different paint schemes, two tone interior, Motorsport door handles and mirrors. Tastefully upgraded by Dinan to include a Stage 3 suspension and cam gear & chip mod. 350hp. Fresh tune up. New tires. Nearly perfect inside and out. No damage history. Runs and drives perfect. One of my favorites but I have too many cars. This is a collectible car that will only appreciate in value and its the nicest one you will find anywhere. Price is firm. 118K miles

I've been talking to the owner. Seems like a good guy, but wants to sell the car worse than I want to buy it. Wife will kill me if another car shows up at the house.
I think that he'd be willing to sell the motor alone, but he's disinclined to do the wrenching all by himself.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if that car were unmolested it would actually be one of the notably rare '88 L6 models.

Pretty sure there were no 88 L6 models and that all 88s and 89s had extended leather like the 87 L6.

There weren't any. Dealers would put the L6 badge on them at the request of owners. Met a guy two weeks ago that did just that.

Why the L6 on the VIN sticker in the photo?
EDIT: Its on the tire pressure sticker. Still seems odd but I believe you.

I know. Seems odd that they wouldn't have changed it though, that's all.
And although I think you're mostly right about the 88-89 having most of the L6 options I think there was leather on he dash and maybe the roof too that the later cars didn't get. Either that or I've lost too many brain cells at this point and I'm just talking out of my bum...

The '88 and '89 cars got leather headliners and dashes, but most were replaced with vinyl dashes.

Why?!? Simply because after they wore out that's when it was done?

wkohler wrote:The '88 and '89 cars got leather headliners and dashes, but most were replaced with vinyl dashes.
I've not seen US '88-'89 E24s before with an original leather dash. The US '87 M6 and L6 had the leather dashes and door caps that were problematic and swapped by BMW under warranty, according to the lore I've heard at Sharkfest.
On the US '88 and '89s, the entire headliner is vinyl, as is the B-pillar trim and rear deck. The sun visor "console", visors, and A-pillar trim are covered in real leather, though. Never ripped apart an '87, so I can't say if those same parts were vinyl.

The dash on my old 88 635CSi was not leather nor was the headliner. Thanks for at least pointing out the possibility that I may have less wrong in my head...

Well, we parted an '89 which had the leather door caps and b-pillar trim. Just assumed on the headliner. Never took that out. Oh well. Just another reason to never own one.
