How do I tell if the M has lighted sun visors?
I see a mirror on the back but the car does not have power.

The illuminated vanity mirrors were an option:

The standard visors did not have the sliding mirror covers, or the plastic perimeter lighting (working or not).

In this car and another I've seen, the beige headliner was masked and painted black when the interior was out. You wouldn't know it unless you looked really hard!

Ok thanks, those are the sun visors I have, which are not in the 528e. Any other electrical stuff on the interior?
Not including the battery, I know I have to r and r the box in the trunk. Also im not swapping the self leveling suspension.

I will have to check that light/heaters issue tomorrow. Man thanks for the help. I havent paid much attention to the interior so far. Planning to take care of interior after the M is running.

Started digging into the head yesterday. This thing was the cleanest vintage engine ive ever seen!

Replace them while the motor is out. So much easier and they won't get any cheaper.

Anyone upgrade injectors? Seems low impedance injectors are not common around the junkyard. Switching to 4 pintle would be nice. Worked great in my 535i.(high ohms)

No need, they last a long time and you can get a rebuilt set for cheap from fiveomotorsports.com.

Well it does look like I have heated seats and map lights. I will take care of swapping them when the M is up and running.

I got the head off today and luckily no surprises.
Valve clearance is exactly in spec.

Rebuilding this head is taking forever. Would you believe I actually need to buy a new socket? After almost 40 years there is yet another to buy, a 17mm deep thin wall spark plug socket.

Might have the head back together this weekend, planning to have engine ready to drop in for friday morning. Start up Dec 1st?

Wow $70! What a rip off!
I bought a $10.99 socket set (deep, metric, anodized) 10-18mm I think, from harbor freight. I ground down (10 minutes) the 18mm socket on a bench grinder. It fits perfectly. Lifetime warranty on the ones I didnt grind.

Took a break from the head to clear out the trunk of the donor M5. I need to put all my scrap metal and junk in there but dont want to have to pull it back out.
This dam battery box was more trouble than it was worth! Jeez BMW did you have to make it a stressed part of the frame!!!

Don't forget that the support beam to the right of the battery box is also M5 specific. So you can either cut out and replace or you can notch the one in the other car.

Can you please be more specific? I fitted the box this morning and didnt see a problem.

The M5 trunk panels will not fit properly unless you cut back or change the panel to the right of the box. Look at your two pictures and you can see the difference in the pieces. This is what I had to do to make it work in my car. Other thing you can do it measure where the box was welded onto the floor by some fixed points like the fuel tank access hole and then you will also see the box is currently sitting too far towards the middle of the trunk. The box needs to go about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch to the right.

Oh yeah and while you are at it, you need also the tabs under the trunk seal area that help to hold the side panels of the trunk carpeting in place. Without those the carpeting does not hold properly.
