For all you haters out there my budget was 10k. I made NO mention of M5's or alpina's in my post.

I really wanted to be at $8k and found THE CAR via PM on bimmerforums where miraculously there are no trolls to flame on my post.

Someone actually contacted me with a car for sale. Isn't that the point of a WTB thread? Wait for it: Yes.

NO I am not lazy. I spent hours over the last couple weeks looking. Could not find what I was looking for and as per my other thread in the general section here decided to post a WTB thread. As a result I was PM'd an offer that I never would have seen because the guy did not have it listed for sale anymore.

Here is why you as a buyer never tell someone your price: they will know what you are willing to pay. In the car business these people are suckers. When you have a car to sell, list it. If someone is looking for a car, tell them about it. The people who are interested and can afford to buy it will contact you.

You can whisper, shout, cry...but it's still a flame and I will say it loud and clear: you do yourselves and this forum a disservice.

Mr. Turdbag, this site does not have moderators. This is something you should have seen when you joined and read the Forum FAQ. It's in pretty plain English, so you shouldn't have missed it.

I have bought and sold enough stuff to know that it is not worth wasting time telling someone about this great car I have for sale only to find out they have $2,000. That's what I call a waste of time. I'm not trying to sell anything. In fact, I never even offered you a car. Figured you would contact me if you were interested.

People on this site who know how to communicate actually work well together. Playing a guessing game doesn't get things done. You want a car, you need to tell people what you're looking to spend. That's how it works.

It's all about attitude. When I asked the question you should have been more respectful and just responded with something more sophisticated such as "it would depend on the car" or "I'd like to stay under $8,500 and would prefer x" instead you came out with your cocky response. My question. Was very valid. The folks here are enthusiasts and often realists when it comes to the value of their cars. Had you given an appropriate answer not only would you have not been "flamed" you might have been offered a very nice example of an e28. I knew from the get go that my car was way out of your league and you proved it.

An apology at this point might be worth quite a bit based on your likely future needs, I doubt we will be getting that.

Mike if I contributed in any way to the responses I received than I am sorry. I thought my response to your budget inquiry was neutral. I did not meant to come off cocky and know how easy it is to do some from the keyboard. I simply wanted to guard my hand.

You are right in your suggested response, it would have been better for sure.

There were still multiple response received here that were uncalled for on a WTB thread (rimjob?)

In any event, it was all for nothing but my frustration and others entertainment as I've discovered something I should have asked early on...the e28's get crappy gas mileage.

I settled on an e28 and found a beauty right over in jersey. Then I thought to ask about fuel economy and was told "teens". I drive 25-28k per year. I'd spend almost 7 grand in fuel just to drive the thing. Cant do it. Back to the drawing board.

I'm still holding out hope for an older bimmer. Now I think it will have to be an e30, and if it's going to be an e30, it's going to be a vert. This almost bring me full circle as I was originally looking at e36 m3 verts a couple weeks ago.

The search continues.

Yikes. FWIW my 535is got 20mpg in city and 25 hwy. Want an e28 with good fuel economy? Try an eta (528e). 24mpg city and up to 33mpg hwy (atleast my wife's does).

Anyone who states fuel economy as "teens" when trying to sell in this day in age should be shot.

Also a note of forum sellers: honestly when we sell cars here we don't try to screw people. If your budget is $8k, and someone has a nice car you want for $3k, they aren't going to hammer you for the extra $5k just to screw you. In fact, it's good to see an e28 purchase with a surplus because many buyers would put the extra money into the car they buy to make it what they want it to be, and proper.

No, they don't. They get the mileage they get, which was pretty much what was expected for the time and the technology.

Much of the advice in your GC request-for-info thread pointed you AWAY from e28's given the annual mileage you expect to put on a car. WH even listed the expected MPG numbers for a large band of old bimmers.

Yet, after your 'hours' of research, and with the mileage expectations all right in front of you, you still posted this WTB thread. I hope you don't do research for a living.


There is a lot of WIN in this thread. It's a keeper. This is the thread that proves one should read every damn thread on this board no matter the title. I skipped it seeing how I'm not selling my car. In doing so, I missed a lot of win.

So I do want to extend my thanks for changing the thread title to something that pointed out just how much WIN I would find here.

Our cars are 20k+ mile/year cars as well... as well as kid haulers to scouts, school, and family events in DC and NC from VA. So I can attest that e28's are very much still viable heavy duty daily's when properly maintained and kept up.

A Beamter is a German civil servant (I read the FAQ when I joined). I don't know what a Bimmter is.

Did you ever ask this person what kind of driving that is based on? City driving? I don't think that someone who lives in Jersey gets the same gas mileage as someone who lives in Kansas.

Of course a 533/535 gets mileage in the "teens". Eighteen or nineteen. In city driving. They get 22-26 on the freeway. 528s get 3-4 mpg more. Exactly what kind of gas mileage were you expecting from a 25 year old German car with a big six cylinder engine?
