Here is what I have noticed, you can have clearance to the strut tube with the tire in its free position, but under hard cornering, you will actually hear it rub. The best indicator of this is to put some masking tape on the strut tube next to the tire. See if that is still there after a day on track. If not, then you are too close.

With that combination, I know it did not rub. No evidence or anything on the strut tube. Doesn't take much to wear the paint on those, actually. I'm just saying what I did, not trying to argue. I know that with that tire and those wheel specs, it works fine.

interesting!

I never realized how much your tires move around on the wheel until I stuck the camera low on the fender for an auto-x.

Here is a pretty cool vid showing how much RA-1's on a specE30 move about!

Worked fine with my Bridgestone 245/40-17s on 17" style 5s, too. No rubbing. It depends on the tire you use.

X2! Every jackass that wants poked/stanced/whatever tires should be made to watch that video.

Have you ensured that you clear the fender during full compression? I found that with the 17x8 ET20 wheel and with a 245 tire I must use a 3mm spacer to keep it off the strut tube, but I am really close on the fender. Maybe 3mm or less away. If you are running stock springs then you can definitely fit the tire, but it will rub if you compress it to the point where you would tuck it into the fender.
It looks like it's going to hit but the suspension geometry prevents that. Been to the track many times with this setup. The worst case test is actually turning into a driveway because you have an external steer angle on the wheel that is going up. My driveway is actually a good test for this since I've chewed up fenders on my CS when it had really soft springs.

I have stock M5 sway bars and Dinan springs which are lower in the front but stock spring rate. I don't baby the car, but I've never tried anything weird like flying over a speed bump with one tire while turning because the spoiler would hit before I had any tire/fender problems. I'm sure you could get 255 and even 225 to hit under certain conditions.

The limit on front tire width is actually the forward inner fender when the wheel is turned in.

Anyway, my point with all this is that you can put a lot of tire on an E28 if you want to, and using a staggered setup is a choice rather than a limitation of the chassis and body.

I have driven Devinder's car albeit with 17x8s and 235s. It's excellent. The damping has a lot to do with it.
