Chris, next time i come up there, we'll go.
There's just something totally American about a joint that defines a "small" burger as one with only ONE patty. Yessss.
Honestly, the burgers are great; yesss, expensive. I would gladly do an In n Out 2x4 Animal Style, then walk across the street and get 5 Guys Fries.
Oh. Almost forgot. I had 5 Guys BREAKFAST in Norfolk, VA. Holy Shit. Nothing like starting your day off with a food coma.

We have:
In-N-Out (our local meets are held there - I just get Iced Tea)
Five Guys
Fuddruckers (super expensive, and cooked on a flat grill)
Smashburger (expensive, and cooked on a flat grill)
Culver's (flat grill)
The Habit Burger Grill (flat grill, and basically like In-N-Out with shit for Iced Tea).
I don't eat a lot of burgers, but when I do, I prefer the non-chain restaurants:
The Chuckbox - hands down the best burger, but I usually get a chicken breast sammich and some zucchini. Burgers cooked over mesquite charcoal. Shit for Iced tea, so I usually get Dr Pepper or just Soda Water with a splash of that crappy 0% juice Minute Maid lemonade.
Original Hamburger Works - sister restaurant to Chuckbox, but not as consistent and they have Mr. Pibb, but better iced tea.
Steakenburger - flame grilled over charcoal. They aren't kidding when they say "small" drink. Burgers are great, but they also have a lot of the "gourmet" types - the namesake has Philly Cheesesteak steak on the burger. Local place with locally-sourced ingredients. Iced tea is passable, but not great.
Chicago Hamburger Company - Great sliders. Never in the area when they're open.
Ted's Hot Dogs has a great burger, great iced tea and the best onion rings I've had. Usually have a hot dog, though. They cook over Royal Oak charcoal - much cleaner, but still a great taste. All the meat is flown in from Buffalo, NY.
Basically, if I'm going to spend $8-10 on lunch or something, I'm not going to a chain if I can avoid it. That said, I do like going to Chick-Fil-A and seeing how many times I can make them say, "My pleasure" during my transaction. They have a great Arnold Palmer, too. We need an iced tea thread.
I will make it a point to give Five Guys a try this month sometime. They just opened one a few months back about two miles from me. Wish they'd put a Chick-Fil-A in, but no. Why would they do that?

All the ones I mentioned are the fast food style. When I'm alone, I generally don't go places where they serve you. I find it aggravating. If I want a refill, I'll get it myself. There are some great sit down places that have great burgers, too - not much more money, but you end up being $15/person after tip.
Alice Cooperstown is a bar type place. Never been there, though.

Not much beats a burger you grill yourself over charcoal.
I had at least a couple friends give me rave reviews of Smash Burger. I finally went there and wasn't too impressed. Maybe it was over-hyped. Then again, maybe it just wasn't that good. Had a great burger in the windy city last night. Bacon, glazed onions, steak sauce and a fried egg. Cholsterol on a bun, but it was delicious.

I worked at 5 guys for 8 months in college and gained 60 lbs. 6-8 double bacon cheeseburgers (L, T, M, grilled onion, ketchup, mustard, A-1) per week will do that to you. They're so good, though, and have very high quality ingredients. Their grilled cheeses are really good and I really like the bacon cheese dogs with bbq sauce and grilled onions. Plus, the Cajun fries are really good. I've found a couple local places in NOVA that I like better, but I have to get a 5 guys burger every once in a while (5 Guys is kindof local since it started here). I've heard people compare 5 guys to In-N-Out before. There is no comparison. 5 guys beats the pants off of In-N-Out, no question. I'd rather eat at Carls JR than In-N-Out.
That video was annoying.

Just in.
Wifey liked it, she requested Cajun fries, and I'm glad.
Me, I got the Bacon Burger "all the way" and I'll have to say it was good.
It seemed like the guys working there enjoyed working there.
A bit pricey compared to the typical "fast food burger chain", but for what we got, including the atmosphere, they get
from us.
Afterwards I showed my wife the video, the why for going, and she literally cracked up almost all the way through.
What I liked best, in addition to all the toppings was the two smaller patties on the smaller bun,
as opposed to a single large patty on a huge bun. Not a big bread fan.
Now I gotta go take a Ken H.

I happened to be near one of these Five Guys things today around lunch time (3pm). I eat lunch at 3pm so I don't have to wait in lines. I find that if you shift your day around, you're more productive. Anyway, I parked the car and walked inside to find just a couple folks sitting with a giant bag of fries. I went up tithe counter and looked at the menu, at which point I was greeted by two employees, one at the counter. To her, I said I hadn't been here before and wanted to give it a try. She then explained that the regular burgers are two 1/4 lb patties, the small burgers are a single patty and everything is a la carte. She gave the rundown on the fries. I couldn't believe how expensive the bacon cheeseburger is! Unfortunately, that's what I wanted, so I ordered that, a small fry (immediately corrected to "regular" with an added, "our fries are good") and a small drink. $13.69! Holy crap! That's more than I spend on 1/2 pound of brisket, new potatoes and corn-on-the-cob at Rudy's! I said, "you must be very proud of your food." She didn't pick up what I was putting down. I asked for pickles, lettuce and A-1 sauce on the burger.
She called out "two patties" and one of the grill people put two nice hand-formed patties on the flat grill.
I got my cup and headed for the fountain. They have the crappy "Gold Peak" iced tea, so that was out. Let's look at the computerized 12 million flavor Coke machine. No Dr Pepper? Fine. Cherry Coke.
I sat down for a bit and waited for the order. Within about five minutes, they called my number (02). I walked up, at which point the guy was filling a cup of fries and put it in the bag with my burger. Then he looked at me, I said I was number two and he scooped up every remaining fry in the tray and dumped it in my bag. Seriously?
Armed with my nearly-translucent bag, I went back to my table. I decided to remove the fry cup first, then using a napkin, I removed the burger (I HATE getting grease all over my hands). I carefully opened the foil and looked at the burger. It looked nice. I ate a couple of fries. Not impressed. Too salty and really greasy. No way was I going to finish the bag - something I knew before walking in. I'm not a fry person to start, but for the purpose of this experiment, I figured it was necessary to get the experience.
The burger was very good. The beef was not overcooked and it didn't taste gamey nor did it taste like McDonalds. If I didn't think about what it cost, I'd rate it pretty high in spite of the American cheese. I hate that stuff. A real burger uses cheddar or Swiss. American cheese is for snack time in kindergarten. So, good burger in spite of the cheese. The bacon was good as it was quite crispy, which works on a burger with the thin bacon.
I didn't finish the fries in the cup, or even start on the ones in the bag. There were some kids a few tables away that apparently go to the art high school and were fighting over fries, so I gave 'em to them.
If I go back, I figure I'd just order the hamburger with some normal condiments and a drink, but it will still be in Chuckbox territory, so I'd just assume go there. I never expected a fast food burger place to be so expensive. I haven't been that upset at the cost since I bought a ham croissant sandwich, a side of mac and cheese and a drink in a deli for $12. A deli to which I've never returned.
