NOT TRUE: Field cannons and Man-o-War (ships of the line) were not privately owned, according to any historical record I have seen. Your statement reduces the struggle our forefathers underwent and the complexity of the insurgency we led against a vastly larger, better equipped, and better trained hegemony that was largely considered to be the world's largest economic superpower. We beat them, and only a couple of years later, the whole European world went up in flames.

I understand the concept of wanting to be equally equipped to defend yourself against ANYONE, but remember, even if you have a tank, you only have ONE tank, and ZERO RESPAWNS; they have jets and nukes. Face it, resistance is now futile.

Your best bet is a single shot anyway. Military studies show that when combat soldiers are given automatic weapons, the number of enemy killed, captured, or wounded per bullet fired drops dramatically. So, if you are in a Red Dawn situation: a) your best best it to avoid direct contact at all costs (use ambushing, subterfuge, and sabotage instead), and use b) a single shot rifle to conserve ammo. if you are engaged.

The gap in the level of technology is vastly different than even the 80's tech in Red Dawn.

Correct; but they could have been. Now there are laws. Try setting up even a lousy (obsolete, but functional) 105mm howitzer in your front yard and see what happens.

Laws?! You're hiding behind laws?! So, are you saying the British Empire was a fully functioning anarchy and that only now we're restricted? Or, are you saying you're too chicken to do what you hold to be true? If you're likely anything close to the average American, you ignore law at your discretion all the time to suite your whims (traffic laws are laws too). If you're truly worried about a government with too much power, the first thing you'd ignore would be laws.

You're more likely too worried about losing your middle-class lifestyle. So, just drop the whole saber-rattling, neo-conservative, 2d Amendment BS and find something real to change. Not many people (even gun owners) want AK-47s rolling around everywhere just willy nilly. It would have one big change: the drug cartels would be opening carrying in the U.S. like aIl hell. It'd make Al Capone and Billy the Kid look like sand box play time. I personally like the fact that the government makes them hard to get ahold of and seeks to keep them from being low hanging fruit, and I'm a big fan of guns.
