Winfred,
As you know
Good thing you are taking this apart before there was a spring failure..

washed the crap out of the water jacket from the rotten coolant, shit looked like a dexcool system that was contaminated and had clay looking crap at least 1" deep in the block, hosed most of it out of the head and would've just pressure washed the block but i am not pulling the pistons as they are beautiful and clean
Image
thats not nearly the worst of it
Image
crank nut had a little ass on it
Image
kinda short on non cleaning things to do till my valve springs get here so i built a spark plug socket, had to jack the one out of the m6 forsale in the showroom to get the plugs out as mine is missing, its a bastard size of 11/16 (17mm is too tight) so i lathed down a socket to fit through the head and tig'd a heyco plug tool end on it (modified from a mercedes tool kit)

and a hunk-o-foam to retain the plug

kinda stuck waiting for the correct valve springs to arrive as the place i ordered them from sent me m50 springs, so i am cleaning and generally farting around with it

powdercoated the headers with superduper heat coating, stuffs like no powder i have used yet so i fucked up the first one a little
Image
Image
redid the first one after sanding the blistered parts and its not perfect but its good enough for an exhaust pipe, wasn't about to blast all of it off to do the whole thing over. curious how well this coating works, the sterling (jethot 1200) on my bav auto m20 headers works pretty good but has come off the bottom 1/3 or so
Image they haven't really gotten any worse since this shot from when i built the motor 27k miles ago.
while cleaning the oil pan i discovered a crack which would've been way more annoying after installation, must've been sealed up by the funk that lives in the baffled side of the pan as it wasn't leaking, not the first pan i have seen do that and start leaking after a cleaning, the crack was on the inside too and a introduction to my spool gun/grinder solved it

its been at our shop for over a year and became interesting to me when i decided the near stripped shell that i was going to build was going to take more time then it was worth to build into a complete car. it was a unfortunate buy for a car lot we deal with and he lost his ass on it to my benefit, i think he had around $2800 in it and i got it for $900, clearcoat is gone and front seat hides are toast but the rest of the car is good, the brake master cylinder was completely bad (which didn't help its marketability) and in the month or so since i had it on the lift last to check out its viability to be my project base the monsoon season started and flooded the computer killing its ability to run, i dried it out and cleaned it up and barred the engine over a few times (hydrolocked with fuel and starter wouldn't get it, too lazy to pull plugs and do it right :D ) to push the gas out of the cylinders that the wet computer dumped while i was diagnosing it into the exhaust and she popped off
Image

poured that much out of the computer
Image

after i got the brakes functioning i took it for a successful test drive, once i get everything stabilized and some more testing on it i am pulling the m30b34 and 4hp22EH and putting them up for sale so if anyone needs either or both they will be up on the block soon

once red gets stabilized i am back on building the m88, took forever to get the correct valve springs in but they are installed and the head is about ready to install and the only thing keeping it from being engine in a few hours is the irrational desire to make everything shiny

Umm, I'm kinda late to the party but I've already gone through a stand alone conversion on my daily driver b35 engine with coil on plug, cam pulse sync adaption, 0-5v TPS, AIT sensor, MAP sensor (that was HELL on the S38).. the whole works. Let me know if I can help.

i have pretty much everything to build the car but haven't gotten the ostrich and other stuff to do the chip work yet, after tuning my blown stroker e30 i am not afraid of it

it livessssssssssssssssss

don't run too bad either for open headers, no o2 sensor plugged in, no idea on valve adjustment and god knows how far out of balance the throttles are, one of them is even missing the idle stop. no codes for the cam sensor so it must be close enough, would've started right up if the obc relay wasn't blocking the starter and the fuel pump relay bad, couple jumpers and it popped right off, didn't feel like fucking around with that crap when the beast was at hand ill chase that crap later

it definitely runs good enough for a test drive when i button up a few more things on the unmodified 413, i figured it would do ok if i got the stuff aligned as the 95 m3 used the same system as the 325 being .5 liter bigger, i just went another .5, design III 24# injectors, i tried a 540 maf and it doesn't really run any different or read different on my scanner idling around 30cfm, but the opening on the plenum is 3" so....... i plan on cutting the flange out and welding on a 3.5" spud for the v8 maf

Wow. What I want to know his how you even got the idea to do this. I'm impressed, which I know means nothing.

been thinking about crossing a injection system for a while now even before i got the m635, years ago i was thinking about using one side of a 750 system on a m20 for a factory maf solution but couldn't find enough info on if it had the ability to accept a normal tps and run a icv with some chip work. was thinking about 1.3 on it but figured why not take a little larger jump and have everything that a full boat standalone system has in a package bmw already used on a descendant of the m88 the s38b38, motronic 3.1 would bring in most of the goodies without vanos to eliminate in the programming but also no knock sensors and a less available maf size upgrade, plus the ecu is a little more fragile and is not uncommon for them to loose a coil or injector driver or have other more serious failure, 413s fail too but a bit less then the 402/405. the system is not really married to any one car as long as it has a tuning option, any standalone would be pretty much the same thing but in blank slate form, i look at this as standalone with a base tune for cheap, what maybe $100 for ecu/harness in a pic-a-part from a 93-95 525?

wouldn't mind checking out the ecu from a s38b38 and see how it would work with my harness and engine but i haven't found one that was a acceptable deal and s38b38 harnesses are stupid expensive, one on has been on ebay for a while with some damage for over $600

I think the only thing it would have trouble with is your cam sync signal since the B38 uses a single pulse can sync, but other than that it should work fine. I think you are better off with what you've got because the ECUs are super cheap and plentiful.

If I were going to do the cam signal, I probably would have started with the B38 parts and probably added the second signal position to drive flange that you can buy from BMW. From what I remember it is a plastic piece with a metal insert in one side. It would be easy to add a metal insert into the other side and would be easier to line up and make work I would think.

You remember correctly, but that provides only a single point for cam sync. The 413 is expecting constant signal for 180* of cam rotation. I would start with mostly B38 parts and make a new tone wheel to work with the 413.

Ah yes. That would work. The next question would be if the pin outs of the V8 DME are the same as the M50. The V8 and the 3.8 are both 3.3

I don't know that without looking it up, but the V8 has extra coil and injector drivers and two more knock sensors, so it wouldn't necessarily be the best platform to use out of the box. The 413 is probably the better one to use because it is more plentiful and more people have fiddled with the software.

3.3 Motronic at least on the 3.8L does not use the knock sensors. I wonder if it could be as simple as changing the chip.

thats why i didn't go with the b38 parts, at the time couldn't come up with a decent pic of the b38 parts as is shown a couple posts up and suspected it was a single pulse, the xdf file from a b38 could be an amusing thing to come across but the displacement and intake tract differences would likely make it not any better then the m50tu map as a starting point. i have interest from mark D to help on the tuning if i need it and am going to let him know its running soon, i want to wait till i have the ostrich II and WB logging stuff before i bother him, plus i need to get it driving before i can tune squat, i need to order a few rubber bits for the idle air and may get a set of silicone push back boots for the plenum ($16 a piece universal ones not the more then twice the price miller ones)

i really don't see why the 413 couldn't be a universal inline 6 management solution, knock sensors on a SOHC could be an issue with the noisy head, not sure if that could be tuned out with a spacer or something on the sensor and maintain functionality, 3.1 may be a better option for them without the knock sensors

it now starts with 100% less jumper wires and warning lights, the fuel pump relay with the harness was bad and the starter relay had chosen that moment to take a dump, you could see it arcing through the orange cover when you hit the key, it needed to go anyway with the 5 speed conversion. figured out the oil level wiring and got that light out too, tricky little bitch, 2 wire switch but they don't go together and it makes a difference which wire goes to which as one grounds to the pan through the housing

a exhaust system and o2 sensor made it a lot happier, the 24# injectors are a hair big without correction but with a little throttle playing I got the sensor cycling and it leaned out and was happy, still need to build clutch hydraulic system and throttle cable bracket then dare I say it.....test drive

ditched the magnaflow crossover muffler from my old system and replaced it with the resonator and front pipes from a e39 530, almost perfect fit, stainless and straight through perforated core

o2 sensor bungs for the as yet Unpurchased wideband system, I'll pop more pics this weekend as it was fairly dark bytime I got it together
