Another E28 M5 in Louisville? I thought I was the only nut! How long has yourz been sittin'?
Mine has been sitting for the better part of 7 years. I know, I know!! It does seem ridiculous. The plan is to play with it this summer and get it back on the road next year. I keep using my kids as an excuse for not having the money/time, but I think that it is about time I got some more use from my favorite ride.
Possibly making it up that way after The Vintage & RTT.
We'll be in ours. :D
Got a bro-n-law in Goshen.

Thanks for all your replies. I have more data on my stumble- I was unable to duplicate it today. I drove the car to the CCA meeting and I couldn't get it to stumble at all, although I wasn't driving as hard as I was on the twisty roads on Sunday.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that I'm thinking its only bad or even there when the car is warm and has been driven for a while. I'm still going to check the in tank pump but that means the filter is less likely, and I would also decrease the odds that it is the regulator. The odds then increase that it is a pump related issue. Someone at the CCA meeting also suggested that it could be the coil to add that to my list. I'll be working on it in the next few days. Thanks as always!

Don't write off the FPR just yet. My stumble was the FPR and it was intermittent.

Well at *only* $70 I'll probably do it no matter what if this is fuel related. How is that now my standard now for super cheap?

You may want to go ahead and get the formed FPR hose as well. You can't use bulk hose because it will kink.

Thank you! I would not have done that.

In tank pump

My in tank pump came on when I had my son start the car. The pump even though it came on ended up being my problem. The big differences I noticed is that the new in tank pump is much quieter than the old one was. I wonder if that should have been my tip to change it rather than do other thimgs. If I went after this issue again and the in tank was easy to hear I would pull it and check on the sock for any debris along with changing the fuel filter to start. This would be cheap things to start off with. Good luck!!

Well my neighbors assisted me- first we pulled the power to the coil and tried listening to the in-tank pump and didn't hear anything when we tried to start the car. But then I wanted to be sure so we jumped the fuel system relay after that. No noise from the in-tank pump. The main pump is clearly working, but nothing from the in-tank one. So I'm going to order an in-tank pump and install that. I am also going to order, as spares, a fuel pressure regulator and a fuel filter. The fuel filter is about 2 years and 5000 miles old so I'm not going to just replace that for the heck of it yet.

I'm skipping the main pump for now since it clearly works.

Where is this (#6) located and do they go bad? Is this the switch that cuts off the fuel pumps if there is an accident?

#6 is the barometric pressure sensor. It is on the pass. fender and you can unplug it if you suspect an issue with it. They do go bad sometimes, but aren't usually connected to issues like yours.

New in tank pump installed. It appears to be working according to my ear and a long handled wrench! I have a spare fuel filter and a spare pressure regulator which will go in next if the problem persists. However it is unlikely that I will know if the problem is still there until I leave for The Vintage since the car tended to only stutter after it had been running for a while. My fingers are crossed!

And you got that formed piece of hose for the regulator, right?

Yep! Thanks for the tip! Plus more gaskets than I'll probably need. If you need a spare E28 ///M5 fuel system part at The Vintage or RTT its worth asking me and checking my box of spares.

Paul- I also still have that yellow film for you and photopark's left taillight has cracks in it so I'm going to continue to hold out for a near perfect one.

I can surely say that my stumble is fixed. The replacement of the in tank pump solved the problem. I still have to get new gaskets for the pump and sending unit, but he's drivable. Just don't fill the tank above 3/4.
