I've heard this before but I don't get it. Can someone please explain this to me? I don't understand how a smaller bore TB increases performance. I'm not trying to be facetious or sarcastic in any way I assure you. I'm guess I'm missing part of the story or something.

Smaller diameter runners increase flow velocity at low RPM, which tends to shift the torque curve lower. Short runners of large diameter (think S38) have low velocity flow at low RPM, which tends to cause poor charge mixing and cylinder filling, which shifts the torque curve higher. Cam profile and timing affects this as well.

Nice explanation. Also worth mentioning are some of the other Hartge factory H5S package goodies that make it so quick: the ported & polished intake manifold matched to the head, the oversized valves, the 282 cam, the 10:1 compression, the CR box... it all adds up to one fun car to drive. I swear it's quicker than my M5. Hell, I could peel out in my '83 H5S even with it's 3.07 diff. Also, an interesting thing happens around 90 mph in these cars, you kind of feel a noticeable "click", kinda like a turbo has just kicked in - you're at 110 in a blink of the eye. And they're stripped-down light! These cars are ticket machines. Good luck keeping it under the speed limit!

Wow, all this with a smaller bore piston huh?

I believe Hartge used the L-block M30s, which have a more-square bore/stroke than the later M30s, and shared with the S38 & M88 engines. I have driven Adrian's H5S and it is sweet, with an obviously stronger but more linear power delivery throughout the RPM range than any other M30-powered BMW I have sampled.

After hearing Tim's story, that would make two M-cars that couldn't shake the H5S. Glad Adrian's oil pump survived this time around

Ron,

Did you recently order these fender liners? To the best of my knowledge, the replacement parts are still black. The grey liners are period correct and NLA--great attention to detail here. If you ordered a set recently let me know as I want them!

Best,

Regan,

I scavenged some from a parts car that were in good shape, sanded them down, primered them, painted, and clear coated them. Cleaned the rubber and put new cad plated screws in.

And that is why it is a "RonP" car and not just some scavenger flipping a rare car for a quick profit.

I noticed this too. I replaced mine relatively recently as the grey ones were all broken and cracked/split. I was stoked to find the replacements being black instead of light grey.

I for one don't believe the colour was ever chosen to be grey. They just turned out that way from the plastic chosen to form them. I think if black had been a no-cost option at the time, then black they would have been. Obviously, now, later on, black has become an option and that's what the replacements are.

I for one, would not regard black liners as any valid reason for marking down any E28 on basis of originality. There are changes that make sense and others that do not. This is one of the changes that makes a whole lotta sense to me.

My 533 has grey ones and my 535 has black. The ones on my 535 are in pretty poor shape, but I can't find a nice set of grey ones anywhere.

There's that look. Ron, did you get my email with instructions for running the washer tubing for the headlamp cleaning system? Just run the tubing, and the wiring loom, and them simply plug everything in. It should run correctly. Let me know how it works out

Update:

Motor is in, but not running yet. Windows went in today and it looks like the tires we chose won't fit. Most of the car is buttoned up. We have been working day and night to get it finished in time, but I know you guys wanted some photos so here ya go!
