Maybe the small diameter is only there to help with the install.
However, there are some interesting wear marks on mine, and I'm not sure how they got there, if it's not contacting the alloy timing cover.

Since the piston acts like a "hydraulic shock absorber," scratches or surface wear could cause it to release pressure from the guide, making the chain squeal and, in the worst-case scenario, causing the loose chain to skip a tooth—a fatal failure in these engines.

I would find and replace that piston anyway.

Just my lucky day! I had luck and found ONE single leftover at a parts dealer for 40$. I ordered from multiple sites below, they all canceled as it was no longer available.

Hello everyone

Could anyone help me with a quick measurement?
I am designing a new short shifter kit to replace the old, sloppy garbage I have. It is way too high and the ratio is waaay too small, every shift is a workout. Something like 2.95 while OEM is said to be 7.55.
I would like to know how high the OEM shift knob sits. It doesn't matter what you measure against, just let me know.

Thanks!

Bonus points if you can tell me stock throw between 3 and 4th. I expect it to be roughly 80-100mm

Long shot because it's E32/E34, not E28, but do you know the difference between these two part numbers for the M30 coolant reservoir?

17 11 1 712 196
17 11 1 719 110

I really can't spot any difference.

Hey! I haven't update my build thread in some time - that's because I had some time to actually do stuff!

Bulkhead connector
I wanted to use a bulkhead connector for my wiring loom, well, turns out I can't. The position I wanted to use was.... taken... by the heater unit. Uhh. Stupid me. Should've checked, a lot of wiring and time out the window.

Image Image

Interior
I didn't like the fabricated unit that the PO made so I rewerted to the original handbrake cover. I plan to install handrests to my sport seats later.
I also found out why I have no reverse light... :D
Image Image

Cam sensor
V2 looks good. M54 hall sensor, in the end I think I'll use the same sensor for the crank too - as I have decided to get a rusEFI and try it! I still have my MS3 in case something is weird.
Image

New slave cylinder
New E28 slave cylinder to replace the questionable (E34?) slave that may or may not have caused shifting issues.
Don't worry, I flipped it after these pictures, as I now realise this is not the correct orientation of the slave. Would've been good to know 2 years ago tho, no wonder it took hours to bleed it last time...
Image Image

Timing chain tensioner
New OEM piston installed, primed, torqued.
Image Image Image Image

then, I could install the front cover for the final time. I forgot to take pictures, but you can imagine it. It looks like.... a cover.

Knock:
Since rusEFI controls knock inputs so much better than MS, I bought a 2 pin knock sensor, drilled and tapped the blocked, installed, ready to rock.
Image

Engine:
Then we installed the engine! Yeah!

My method was: remove all the subframes for more clearance, installe the engine together with the transmission, then installe the subframe from below with the engine already bolted to it.
Image Image Image Image

New 750i master painted and installed together with the E46 heater valve. I kept the 518i booster, original used reservoir and my E12 cap:
Image Image Image

Not a lot of space with the schmiedmann headers, but it fits...
Image

My custom DSSR waiting for the custom shifter - but it will only come later, I have other priorities right now.

Part two.

I refreshed my driveshaft's front half - it was needed, but I don't get away with it. I found out there's slop in the U-joint at the differential...  but the rear end & suspension will only came next year. I just want to drive the poor thing this year, perfect or not.

Anyhow, I installed an E34 CSB in place of the somehow... (???) very damaged E28 original 43 year old CSB.
If you have any idea how it happened, let me know. The marks around the bearing was me with a hammer, but it was egg shaped before I touched it!
Image Image Image Image Image

The CSB came off easily, but the centering bushing game me nightmares. I ended up grinding away a part of it, then chiseling it into a C.
Image Image Image Image Image

Ew.. I first thought it was grease.. only realised later that at one points, this used to be plastic. Luckily a local shop has it in stock from FEBI for a crazy price of 8$.
Image

Painty painty and install:
Image Image Image Image

Coming next:
-Design & machine oil level sender blockoff
-Install the steering box, crossmember and center steering link
-Preload the CSB
-Install all the suspension parts
-Check the fitment of the new acc pedal
-Install new hood latch cable (I am buying it from a bike shop)

Obv. a ton more to do, but these are the next steps. I still need to point a lot of smaller stuff, make some brackets, do the wiring etc etc

If you are wondering where my idea for the post Easy method for misaligned driveshaft halves + E34 CSB, Guibo Info came from, well check this out

Image
Image

Grrrrr.
Marking the two halves together was useless because messed it up before me. Balancing is secondary, at least the U-joint phasing is correct now... another 2 hours wasted. At least I caught it on time. No wonder I had takeoff vibrations in 1st. Bad CSB, misphased U-joint..
I re-checked the CSB I removed and noticed that it's not the original, but a FEBI replacement part, so it all makes sense.
Everything aligned up again..
Image

I installed the steering box, center link, tie rods and steering shaft/linkage today, also. Made no other progress as my time was taked by the driveshaft.
Image

Oh, and I also noticed that my left output-shaft is damaged quite bad. :( A ton, and I mean a TON of play in the thing, roughly 3-4 degrees in the inner CV joint. The right one looks fine, but it does leak too. I have 4 spare units, I will have to see their conditions and origin (hopefully not a 518i, everything else is the same from 520 to M5)

I think I mentioned the E46 electric pedal before but made no posts about it.

Well it was quite simple. I researched online and a lot of people mentioned cutting and welding mounts etc... Erghh, I'd rather not do that. Then I test fitted the bracket and it was very clear how to make it work. I needed to cut a little bit out of the E46 bracket as it's wider, and made a small adapter for the throttle stop bolt. 3D printed from PETG, everything fits perfectly. Time to get it made from aluminium on CNC, then it's done. Really simple stuff and fits like OEM, I truly don't understand why some people are welding up stuff
Image Image Image Image
Image

My issue with the box hitting the engine mount is now solved, so I could finally tighten down all the steering components, crossmember and start installing the suspension parts. For now, I had to remount the "original" parts that are absolute garbage. Shitty coilovers, and broken top mounts. I will change these later, money is tight right now, because we bought a new flat and still have to pay for everything inside :( Maybe next winter. I just need to get this car running first.
Image Image

Also check this out. While playing with the accelerator pedal I found some wires hanging from my seat. Hmm. Weird. Manual seats with 6 wires? I sent the pics to my friend who said it could be heating. I removed the cover on the side and vuala, the connector is there. Good news: seat heating!! YESS! On the other hand: WTF? Who covered it up? Or was it always there just covered by the factory?
Anyway, if someone has two E34 buttons in europe, lmk.
Image Image Image Image

I bought a coolant reservoir from an E34/E32. Well fuck. On pictures it looked much smaller, that's because the E34 engine bay is much bigger. It barely, barely fits into an E28 but its hitting the intake manifold. :(
Image Image Image

So I need to find a different solution. Obviously, this is easy because it's litereally just a tank, mount it and go. BUT, 1. it has to look neat and clean, I want to keep the engine bay tidy. 2., I don't want to weld more and more tabs - and as you can see,  there's nothing left. I found some pics online I liked, so I will see.
How big of a reservoir could I even need? The stock one is roughly 4 liters from eyeballin, and it's filled to like 80% of the height so it's basically like 3.4 liters of water inside and only 0.6 liter for expansion room --> This is probably for safety if something leaks, there's a buffer, but I think I can get away with a much smaller tank.
I thought about a tank mounted next to the radiator, similar to what E36 guys do when they swap their built-in-tank-radiators for full sized ones, but I had nightmares trying to bleed the system with the E36 radiator. Also, since it would then work as two tanks interconnected at the bottom and the top, air would just go into the radiator and the cylinder head each time the car is stoppod. Noooo. That's why I like the E34 M30 design in the first place. Clean install and sits higher than everything else --> I am debating making one this style from aluminium, just smaller. Thoughts?

The reservoir I meant for E36s:
Image
Like, I see no valve or anything, therefore air just flows back into the radiator every time the car stops?? Am I missing something or is this a shitty solution?

Final part of todays post
My handbrake is all shaky shaky. Upon investigation, I found that the sheet metal around the.. other sheet metal part is broken, bent upwards and cracking. I bent it back and its a bit better but still loose.
Shouldn't these two be welded together? Should I tack them in place? If you check the pictures, you can see some silver area - that's from rubbing as it's loose

Well, so far no luck.
2 of them are for the 518i (smaller). 1 is completely shut, straight junk. The other one is also somewhat worn, but maybe in a bit better condition than the one currently installed. So, worst case scenario, I will install that as-is until I find something better.

Half shafts and CV joints are pretty much NLA everywhere, but I did find this:
SKF VKJA 8810 --> says it's compatible with E24, E24, E28, E32, E34
Maybe I can find an E34 M30/M60 half-shaft, and use the joints on my E28 inner-section? The e28 half-shaft is a bit shorter. (E34 M50 is different, so that's a no-go). Can anyone comfirm the joints themselves are the same?

Yes that handbrake bracket has failed. It's common. I welded mine and it was a horrible experience. I under estimated the effort. It's hard to clean the area for welding. And chances of damaging or setting the interior on fire is high. You need patience or get someone with food experience to take care of it.

Thanks! I think I'll try to get my TIG welder in there instead of the MIG and hope for less sparks... I will remove the seats in this case anyway.

I tried TIG at first. But I totally failed at properly cleaning the area which made welding very difficult. Ideally the bracket should be removed, so the metal can be cleaned between the layers.
I hope you have better luck than me.

Yeah, without removing the interior I barely had access with all the protection (boxes and vinyl :D ) in the car so I used MIG in the end.
Please don't look at the welds, I didn't even see what I was doing. It holds and that's what matters. I also took apart the assembly, cleaned and greased everything. I never thought that I would say this but pulling the handbrake feels good. The clicking has a nice vibration.

Does anyone know the numbers on the plaque for the E28 M5/635csi steering box? I have found a low milage box that the owner states is from a 6-er, but I would like to double-check if it's truly a quick box vs a normal E28 one. Thanks.

Thanks. I've read the post, but it's not super detailed on exactly which boxes are and arent quick ratio.
The box I found has a silver plaque, says ZF - Schw. Gmünd - Made in W. Germany + 8052 955 213 + 8716 0582.
I could not verify the box from this number only.

However, I did find an ebay ad that has the same code on it, it's a blue tag, and also says 1126 546.0:

No luck again, all I got back was:Hydro steering box 112654632 13 1 126 546
Delivery discontinued by the factory

Any ideas? Thanks

They feel different; the E28 is "lighter and requires more turns to corner"...the E24 is "heavier in the steering but requires fewer turns"...in both, all the steering arms, etc., are new, so I imagine that's how they felt when they were new cars. But I don't use either for racing or track days, so the most noticeable difference is the heaviness or stiffness of the E24.....if that's what you're looking for, the change is worthwhile, but for casual driving, it doesn't make sense (for me at least)

Re: szacsi72's 1984 Zinnoberrot 535i Build

Post by szacsi72 »

Haven't posted a while as I mostly did uninteresting and minor stuff. Progress is a bit slow because I am waiting for parts.
1. Designed a mount for the spal fan for the 535 radiator. I have to wait until it comes in, as it's not possible to install the fan if the radiator is in place. I did receive my new oem bmw coolant hoses from germany, so all is ready to go. Hopefully, I get the mount from the laser guys this week and the main part of the coolant system will be done this week.
2. Sump guard + undertray: I designed a new sump guard for the car that also extends left and right, all the way back to the anti roll bar. It will act sort of an aero undertray to minimise drag and reduce front lift.
3. Changed the transmission oil, holy shit was it overdue! I think it was never replaced before. The amount of metal shavings is NOT too bad for 30+ years; and the oil wasnt tooo bad apart from the water contamination. Mind you, that car has seen -5 degrees and was stopped last time in 30, so it may be just condensation. Anyway, Valvoline ATF was my choice for now, we will see. I will change it after 1000km along with the engine oil after the break-in. Depending on how the synchros feel, I may try some GL4 manual transmission oil later.. Just to compare.
4. I'm also waiting on Castrol 75w140 LSD oil as the differential is leaking mildly.
5. Repaired a lot of broken plastic tabs..
6. The schmiedmann headers I got don't fit at all. It's hitting the firewall. I had to cut and re-weld the tabs, and even now it's not optimal. I will have to remove them again, cut and weld them once again for a double pie cut. Other have not reported this issue, so I think quality is hit and miss.. Erghh,, welding up the front part of the exhaust will be shit. Anyway, I ordered most of the needed material for the exhaust and I actually changed my mind on the exhaust setup:
Schmiedmann headers 2x2" --> 2x2" secondaries roughly 25cm --> Y-merge into 1x60mm, cone to 2.5" --> 2.5" resonator glasspack --> 2.5" muffler --> Y-pipe to 2x60mm exhaust tips
The lenght of the secondaries will be tuned. I am building the exhaust out of 304 steel with mandrel bends. Since I am a beginner welder, I can weld OK welds with TIG (OK = not nice but holds well), but it will take ageees to fabricate alone.

And since it snowed a lot lately, I took the E39 out to have some fun. It needs a new transmission as the ZF 5hp18 decided to spit out the reverse gear; but it needs to wait until the E28 is on its own legs.

A lot of my energy (time & money) is focused on our new flat. Kitchen appliances etc are much, much more expensive than I thought - especially since it's our first own home, we need to buy everything. But, it is nice to finally have our own home. With more peace, maybe I will also have more time to spend on the car.

Most parts should arrive by friday, so I can get started with the front section - at least have the O2 bung ready. Mufflers should come next week.

Uff, I have not updated my thread in a long while.
I didn’t have a lot of time lately, so that small amount I still had, I focused on the car.

Sorry for the shitty post, it’s going to miss a lot of things and pictures. My new shit company phone – namely iPhone 16E – decided JPEG is dead and used this HEIC or whatever format that most online image upload websites don’t like.
If there is any detail you are interested in please let me know and I will upload it.

EXHAUST
I uploaded a picture before of my planned exhaust setup, that is now 75% done. The rear section I will finish later (when the car drives and I can turn around in the workshop). It look an awful lot of time, especially as I am not a welder. But I tried to make everything right. Proper merge and all.. Not much to add, so I will just upload some pictures. Making the scmiedmann headers to properly fit and merge was a nightmare, they were hitting the firewall out of the box. Ended up cutting them and re-welding multiple times..
ImageImageImageImage

HANDBRAKE
Handbrake bracket fixed.
ImageImage

ECU & WIRING
Once again one of those things where there’s not much to say. It is really not super complicated, just takes time.
RusEFI uaEFI in custom housing, running 6x6 fully sequential, Bosch DBW, built in AFR. I used FLRY-A wiring with basic colour coding and bought TE connectors off aliexpress.
ImageImageImageImageImageImage

BRAKES
Finally recieved the machined adapters for the rears, so brakes are finished.
Final setup:
348x24mm E65 front rotors, Brembo 4 pot radial caliper
312x20mm E36 m3 rear rotors, Porsche 911 2 pot calipers

E32 750i MC with E28 518i vacuum booster
ImageImage
  COILOVERS
Installed the Neomax N-Coilovers, waiting to recieve and install my custom fixed-camber plates. (and, of course I do). Welding was a PITA, as my MIG welder gave up halfway trough. I had to TIG weld the left one, but with all the rust and shit, it was an ugly job.
Also, getting that 41mm nut off to replace the wheel hubs/bearings was also not an easy task…
ImageImageImage
 OIL & START
My oil of choice of first start and break-in period is the Valvoline VR1 20w50 EU (not the same as the US version)
The car successfully started on 2026/May/12.
-No headers
-No intake gasket
-No gas pedal
-No AFR
ImageImageImage

Youtube:
https://youtu.be/Igf9IZqQOKE

Truly just a test to check the wiring. I have finished installing all the missing pieces in the meantime, so a proper idle should follow up soon…. once the lacqeur is fully dried and I can install everything

If you work on cars you know how much work this „small update” is.. Sorry to not be able to document it better.

Anyhow, I installed an E34 CSB in place of the somehow... (???) very damaged E28 original 43 year old CSB.
I guess I don't check your thread very often. Anyway, don't know how it happens, but I've seen more than one odd shaped center bearing.
The CSB came off easily, but the centering bushing game me nightmares. I ended up grinding away a part of it, then chiseling it into a C.
Oh, those things are evil to remove. I've done several and they are absolutely no fun at all.

Ew.. I first thought it was grease.. only realised later that at one points, this used to be plastic. Luckily a local shop has it in stock from FEBI for a crazy price of 8$.
I've seen some plastic, some rubber and some goo. The rubber obviously turns into some other substance with age, which might resemble grease.

Hey guys.

After talking to a guy who fitted an E34 M30 coolant reservoir, I re-evaluated the situation and - altought barely - it fits. The trick is that you have to slighty move it off center, say 10mm, to the passanger side. Pics will follow soon with some updates, car should take it first true ride next week - but I'm off to buy a boat this week.

Anyway, back to the reservoir. It comes with a 2.0bar cap (17111742231), can anybody recommend me a cap, that will fit and work, but is rated for less pressure? The E28 original one is only 1.2bar.

Secondly, it has a leveling switch (61311378320), is there any way to delete this? Say, an original BMW cap without the sensor? I will not use it.

Thanks for your help!

Cap 17137639023 1.4 bar, from e34 525i fit the M30 reservoir. Screw cap 17111719430 for deleting (e34 524td use the same M30 reservoir but without level sensor)
