LOTS of them! Finally made the pilgrimage to the BMW Welt & Museum in Munich today. Spent ~3 hours inside browsing, reading, gawking, taking photos... My wife even seemed to enjoy it! One thing I noticed was that most of the cars in the museum had license plates with current TÜV inspection stickers, which means they could be pulled out of the museum and driven legally right now. I was floored by that.

Here's the whole shootin' match, 227 photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/thornton_ ... 3199635685

A couple highlights...

Click on this one then zoom in on the license plate; the top circle shows when the next TÜV inspection is due.

I saw lots of out of the ordinary cars at the Porsche Museum yesterday, but seeing a mad '80's Z28 on the way home made my day. It doesn't look like much until you zoom in & see that it's got a German license plate on it, and know that it's on the A81 just south of Stuttgart.

Image

I first spotted the car as it was coming onto the autobahn from the onramp, and did a double-take that almost made me drift out of my lane. I slowed a bit to let him pass so I get a better look, and he gave me a big thumbs-up when he passed by. He had a phone in his hand, so I think he grabbed a photo of my car as he passed, and I got this photo of his shortly after. Not long after, he slowed & let me pass, and waved as I went by. Over the next ~30 kilometers or so, we passed each other several times, and had a few ~175kph bursts when we got to a no speed limit zone. Then he waved goodbye when he finally exited at Herrenburg. Nice to come across another car geek on the autobahn!

mye28.com is blocked from India (or most of it anyway). I saw about a billion of these over the past week.

Image

So, I guess if you're in India they aren't that out of the ordinary.

This is the post popular variant, but there's a slightly larger variant in Delhi that, apparently, easily seats 9 people (easy, of course, being relative).

I was in Bangalore and Delhi. I didn't see a SINGLE sports car the entire time. And trust me, I was looking. The sportiest car I saw was one Porsche Cayanne. I rode in an A6 once. I understand why sports cars aren't POPULAR in India, but it was pretty shocking that in all the traffic I was in (and I was in A LOT) there were NO sports cars. I'm curious why.

It's very rare to see an e28 these days outside of a car show.

A '53 Chevy Suburban AKA carryall. A genuine barn find . Last registered in '96, last run in '06 . It was running but had a bad water pump. and the rear brakes were frozen. It was repainted a lighter green than the original Brewster green . It was very nearly the '54 that my mom drove and my 15 yr old brother maintained when we were kids.

Saw some ratty old Merc, parked in the tree grove.

Then I was geeking out on all the oddball wagons in the same grove. Name that grocery getter!

What an awesome sighting on the autobahn, makes me chuckle to picture that car on German roads. I wonder what the German inspection authorities think when he brings that in for registration! And I wonder how scary it feels at autobahn speeds...

This person in the parking garage at work drives this daily in the summer and it is obviously loved. It's in great shape and always backed into the same parking spot.

I found an oddball at the used car lot down the street; an Alfa GT Junior 2000 with gullwing doors.

You don't see many of these gems anymore. Early 80s Isuzu I-Mark diesel.

An old Caddy coupe. Some research suggests it's a 64, I'm sure some will know right off. I guess at the time they actually were a better than average domestic car, not just fancier. Whatever, big, huge. Also over on the far left is the tail of an early 80s Subaru.

I passed a '70ish CdV convertible Tues on my way to see the grandsons. My brother had a '73 Fleetwood with a 500 in it. He sold it and bought a Geo Metro

Just had a Noble M400 next to the M on a redlight. Doesn't look like it belongs on the road.

I'd never even heard of it before, sounds kickass in performance. Not sure about the styling, looks like a Porsche slantnose with a Saturn tail. Hopefully it looks better in the flesh.

I saw a couple of oddballs yesterday; first is an '80-something Buick Skylark with the rear half chopped off, and a monster log splitter grafted on. Not exactly a professional job, but... Couldn't help but wonder how much beer was involved in dreaming up and building that monstrosity!

Image

Next was a Ford COE; not sure what year it is, but it was recently rebuilt, with a Chevy 409 under the cab. Had a very healthy rumble as it rolled by, and was clean as a whistle.

it's on some sort of agricultural chassis, there's a huge joint behind the front wheel that's hydraulically articulated.

Wow, that thing just redefines badass. As far as driving it on the road, I think both 3 wheelers and ag equipment have certain exemptions. Besides, who's going to pull it over?

Was behind this coal-roller for a while this morning. Cool car, and you never see them in the NE, but what a smelly little beast.

No damn wonder the US was turned off to diesel for so long. VW ruined diesel's reputation - TWICE.

I saw this on the way back from Fiverwest on the 205 in Portland. Not sure what it is; hopefully someone will know from a distance.
