What out of the ordinary cars did you see today?

Latest were a 64 Impala , not super rare but it had Cragar chromed mags and really looked boss. A much rarer sight was the Vega with a vinyl top.

Andy, I'm not sure what's going on with the Bug. The deck lid vents are wrong for a '52-'53 but the convertible top window looks early.

My last bug was a '58. Actually, it was '58 body with parts running from '56-67. If the guy took the over riders off, and filled the holes with chrome push in hole cover thingies. The glass tail lights make it pre '62 but could be bought at a swap meet.. I would love one, primarily to drive through the woods .I would be scared to drive it in today's traffic.

On the way home from 5erDrive, driving up Highway 26 leaving downtown Portland, I see an dark blue M1, in stop and go traffic heading into Portland. Happened too quick to snap a photo, but it was glorious. Turns out, it was probably leaving the Forest Grove Concours d'Elegance, along with countless other very nice classics. Odd place to see my first M1.

They were used as postal vehicles in the early 50s. Later on, I saw a '37 De Soto 5 window. It was restored and painted a light brown. A fine example of art deco styling. Guy said it was running hot in the traffic we were side by side in.

The old Helms Bakery building is just down the street from me; it is now the home of H.D. Buttercup Furnishings. It's a vast warehouse space with wonderful original wooden bow trusses and lots of rooftop clerestory windows. They have one of those trucks parked inside up front in an area set up as a mini-museum to Helms. It's a pretty cool little van; to see one outside it's native habitat is rare.

I can remember the Helms trucks from when I was growing up in LA. You'd hear the whistle and it would be Mom, Mom, can I have a doughnut!!! The trucks I remember though were a bit newer, kind of surburbans or something like this.

Our family car growing up was a 62 Chevy Suburban with the tail/lift gate, not the 'ambulance doors' like that pic. Ours had side windows too, not a true 'delivery' style truck, but that same bodystyle. Wish we could have hung on to it

I saw (2) Toyota Hiace vans cruising thru SF today. We don't get them here and they were identical. I'm thinking Canadian rental vans maybe.

Coming from a small Midwest town where " yer foreign cars ain't welcome" it was really cool to stumble across an all BMW junkyard.

Thennn, I found this place. It wasn't exactly hidden, and apparently has been there at least 40 years. I bumped into the owner's son, " yea, he doesn't like to sell the old stuff. He is 85 now, has been here about 42 years, but he likes to sell the newer stuff"









That Alfa had me. I love those things.

There was probably 100 cars there, but these were some of my favorites. I love the desert.

I was at Sports Car for work Friday and went back Saturday. I wanted to jump the fence and go through all of the cars, but that obviously isn't an option. Place is neat!

The dude on University had some crazy stuff. I figured it is a pretty well known collection given how busy the street is. I mentioned it to a few guys at work, and they were familiar with it.

The Porsche yard was awesome. I have never seen such a thing, and to see so many 911s, let alone cut up ones, was awesome.

Saw this first a few days ago coming out of the Grand Canyon, then a few hours ago coming into Moab, Ut. An odd built in/on camper on a Chevy pickup cab/chassis with a German license plate. Wasn't running too well, a diesel going way slower than the flow of traffic.

My family had one of those when I was a teenager in the late 80's. Fucking thing tried to kill me one day, throttle stuck wide open as I was coming into town in a 25mph zone. The Eagle itself, as an honest-to-goodness 4wd wagon, was ahead of its time, in my opinion.

Truly it was. Unfortunately it was also coyote ugly. You know what they say, beauty may be only skin deep, but ugly goes all the way to he bone. It also had crappy AMC/Rambler engines. Great running gear, at least past the engine, but it had nothing else going for it.

Picture a puke green with faux wood sides Matador wagon as a lawn ornament. Circa 1972. Quite posssibly a 360 or a 401. Likely long gone as they could be shoe horned into a CJ5 or a Gremlin. I go past this vintage Kenosha monster coming into Brockton on rt 28. They were typical station wagons except different in places. .

For the second time in the last few days, a gray Chrysler wagon has gone by that has by the sound of it a healthily massaged V8 with a manual transmission behind it. I didn't think Chrysler built that particular model with a manual transmission, but there is definitely a non-automatic transition between gears. It's an uphill stretch leading out of town, and is fairly narrow & twisty, and both times the driver has had his foot in it pretty good, so you hear it before you see it, and you don't see it for long (so no pics, yet), and you can hear it as he pushes the thing until he gets over the top of the hill, about a kilometer away. The car looks like it's on aftermarket wheels, is lowered a tad, and has what looks to be some gearhead stickers on it.

Seeing a big V8-powered American-built car like that around here is pretty unusual, but one that has been tweaked to the point that this one has would probably be considered out of the ordinary even in the US.

1938 Chevrolet Fangio Coupe prepared by T-Zero Racing. Won the 2013 Vintage Cape Horn Rally - Driven by a 70-year old couple.

A restoration was just completed, preparing it for the next season.

Things I noticed:
- Has an oxygen system. Since some of the rallys get to 15k feet and the owners are 70 years old...
- Carburated, but with a trick manual mixture adjustment that uses an O2 sensor to calibrate.
- Amazing workmanship and detail in the engineering. The spring mounts on the front suspension are works of art, for example.

Just about the coolest car I've ever seen.

I've seen this thing around Kandern a couple of times, and I have no earthly idea what it is, but it's cool. It has a VW logo on the front (and the back I think), and looks as if it's got an air-cooled engine in the back, but I've never seen anything like it. Anybody have any ideas?

That was taken at La Jolla independent and it is also in Monterey this year. I don't know anything about it but I'll ask Carl Nelson.
