I decided on a GT350R, because why not. I have verbal confirmation that my allocation is set. Will be a MY17 car, so I likely won't get to order for another month and then it will arrive sometime in late summer.

If I got a '16 would have been Deep Impact Blue. For '17 that color is gone, so I need to check out the new palette. No stripes. Will add the electronics package to get AC and stereo.

Neither; I'll give the full report when the order is in. But I wouldn't buy one above MSRP on principle. If that were the deal, there would be a very nice 996TT + 335i in my garage instead for the same money. That would probably make more sense anyway, but my desire for the 350R is strong and irrational, and I don't have kids yet, so I am jumping on the opportunity.

A $70k markup on a GT350 is stupid; a quick internet search shows dealers around the country willing to sell for MSRP or very, very close to it. It is harder to get an R without some connection, because <10% of the total Shelby production are R versions (i.e, ~300-400 cars per year). I was not in favor of paying extra for the R at first, but when you figure that the retail price of the CF wheels alone covers the difference between base and R, and there are a ton more changes that are even harder to replicate (custom tuning for both the ABS and the MagneRide dampers due to the ligher wheels, the aero package, different springs, list goes on), it starts to make sense especially considering the relative rarity and therefore long-term resale value.

I am pretty bummed that I can't the 2016MY Deep Impact blue; that is the color of the GT350 (non-R) that I drove around the grounds at Autobahn CC, and it is a stunning color in person. The 2017MY Lightning Blue looks very close to the show car Liquid Blue color. It's pretty cool; in BMW terms, if the Deep Impact is similar to Avus, the Lightning is closer to Estoril.

Tammer, I'm so happy to hear that you are purchasing this fine machine. So many of us have known each other through the boards and have actually witnessed from afar one another evolve through the years. I remember when you were a broke college kid and the best thing you had going for you was a good mind and a strong sense of morality and ethics. I find your desire and ability to purchase the car a strong reflection of the American Dream where still today this country rewards hard work and commitment. I know you have worked late nights and flown many miles to get to this point in life and I say kudos to you. The car is a representation of your work ethic and you deserve it. I don't see it as irrational. I see it as motivation for more good things to come. Congrats ! Have fun and strap on for the ride of your life because you just checked off one for the bucket list so the next package will most likely be delivered by your wife !!

I know a guy who has access to the Magneride calibrations. You wouldn't want the ones for the R without having the CF wheels. Apparently they road test and calibrate every setup individually. There's a different setup for a Denali with 19" wheels and 20"ers.

This is definitely the kind of thing that I have to actively talk myself into. Even though I really want the car, and after many years am finally able to afford something like this, there is a very deeply-ingrained frugality and preference for practical, older cars (like, say, E28s and E34s) that I have to overcome. The most I've ever paid for a vehicle is $9700 (the 135i was more, but I knew I'd flip it). The newest vehicle I ever bought is now 14 years old (again, excepting the 135i). So even though I want it, it's a big mindset shift to contemplate spending the equivalent of a down payment for a nice home on a brand new, impractical car.

But I will, dammit!

Good luck! I used to strive to own a nicer/newer cars and accomplished that for about 3-4 years and then fell back into buying cars that essentially end up costing almost nothing because it was fun to drive for almost free. I just recently grew tired of it and bought an expensive newish car. 2008 Volvo S60 T5 for $6800. haha

i have bought new cars and I have bought used cars. The slightly used is the best value equation. It seems to me that you have really thought this through. Your downside exposure is a months salary at worst with this car. When you think of all the late nights you spent to be in this position you deserve it and if you can't leverage your talent for a little self indulgence then your no fun ! You will buy many cars in your life and I doubt you will ever regret buying this particular vehicle because it's rare !

I agree with Todd that running cars for very little is fun but it's relative to your experience. I think your mustang is a smart buy made even smarter by your history of frugality as it balances things out. Do you smell that smell in the air? It's the suburbs ..... Ha !

So, continuing the Ford theme. This week instead of flying back to Chicago after my typical work travel, I flew to DTW instead. A friend picked me up at the airport:



I've driven the GT350 (not the R - which this one is), but only got to ride this time. But oh man, the noise! And the ride is really not bad, even over ripply Detroit pavement. Firm, yes, but not punishing at all. My friend works at Ford Performance - this GT350R is owned by the group - and we spent some time touring the lot and the workshop. Lots of cool stuff to see: GT350R CF wheels, GTs in various stages of assembly/ disassembly, GT/GT350 brake calipers (they are the same).

Other fun stuff in the lot included a 991 GT3 (a performance benchmark for the GT350R), a bunch of Raptors in varying states of production readiness, and both US and European versions of the Focus RS. The Euro RS gets leather-trimmed Recaro single-piece seats that put the US versions to shame, but I guess they don't meet US crash standards.

After poking around the lot, we grabbed dinner, then we got down to the reason I was there, which was to buy this from my friend:



My first Ford - a 2014 Fiesta ST w/ the Recaro package - and the little, cheerful brother to the big, angry brother that arrives later this summer. Short version is, we needed a commuter car and the seller just happened to need something bigger to accommodate the growing family, with baby #2 on the way. This morning I drove back to Chicago early. It's quite the little riot. Nearly 200 HP, 2750 lbs - puts it right at E30 M3 power to weight, but with a bunch more torque and really short gearing. Yes, it's wrong wheel drive, but it is very lively with an aggressive alignment and has great turn-in and direct steering. Needs a limited slip diff, but outside of that it's a good bit of fun while still being practical and efficient.

Congrats on the little wrong-wheel-drive sprite, I watched a one-take on youtube about that vs an E46 M3 and it was interesting to hear how much fun that car is.

I test drove a 2016 Mustang GT V8 6spd convertible Friday night. Overall I really thought it oozed quality and the exhaust and driving experience was nice. I couldn't get over how big the car was, it just felt HUGE. I should have parked it next to my E46 for comparison but it felt considerably larger which isn't the direction I want to go with our next purchase. I also drove a 996 C4S Cabrio 6spd with 50k miles that was a fast, rattletrap mess. Maybe it was a poor example of the breed but I wasn't a fan.

The 996 Cab I got seat time in was also a rattly, cheap-feeling mess. Pretty sad. Interior was worse than a lot of E36s.

I agree that the quality is very high and just not in the interior. That goes for the body, engine compartment and even under the car. It is big but not huge. Is an experience going from the GT to the Tiger. GT has me way spoiled. I have to drive it o Atlanta on Thursday and can't wait. May take it to 140 mph. Will eventually find the top end. Heard it was just south of 160.

So my son is back from A&M for the summer. He read about installing a Subaru front ground effects lip on his Fusion. He ordered it and we installed it yesterday. Then he wanted a picture of his car next to its big brother.

Next mod is to install some more rear diff cradle upgrade parts. The supercharger modification beckons.....

Yep, taking a base GT and putting a SC on it. Is a OK deal, may only be saving SC install costs. That same thing would have pushed mine to over $50K

The power those things can achieve is insane. Duke, I really like the matte stripes on the GT, better than the stripes on the Shelby (the Shelby stripe edging makes them stand out too much).

1. Can one get the 3.55 Torsen diff swapped into the PP package? Your comments indicated the 3.73 may be a bit short.
2. Any way to swap out the 6-speed manual for an auto? The thought of dealing with a manual in Denver traffic makes my left leg hurt.
(I can testify to this as driving the M5 around town with it's manual is anything but fun.)

Just order the manual as it has a 3.55. The swap into a PP car is only limited by you buying a 3.55 diff and installing it. I am sure there are many that would trade a 3.73 for their 3.55.
