This is an obvious noob question but I think it would clarify the options being weighed in this build. What are the differences between the b34 and b35? Are the bottom ends the same? Would swapping in a b35 head yield the same performance increases as a complete engine swap? I've heard better flow through the b35, but what else? What has been done to make the new head 'super duper'?

Sounds very cool. Can't wait to see the progress.

This question would be better served in an entirely new thread.

I agree.

Thread split from Todd's turbo buildup thread. Prepare to be told to search, cause your question on b34 vs b35 differences has been answered many many times. The information isn't hard to find if you're willing to look.

bigger valves (1mm on each side), a different piston and combustion chamber design, port size and shape, intake and exhaust runner changes...and specifically motronic 1.3 to top it all off.
You are going from an 8:1 182 HP engine to a 9:1 208 HP engine. I dont know if id do a b35 just for that, to leave it alone, but id probably stick with the b34 in your car if you plan to go turbo since its tried and true.

The valve is only bigger on the intake side, exhaust is the same.

Ok, thanks for splitting the thread. My question is with regards to the b35 and FI and also what Todd has done specifically to the b35 head in his current build.

Here's what I'm working with:

b34 head with $1350 in machine work and materials: port & polish, port matched intake manifold, Jordan Milos bored/trumpeted throttle, Schrick performance grind 282 cam, SS valves, dual springs 50% stiffer and titanium retainers. Bottom end was rebuilt with new main bearings, rod bearings rings, seals, head gasket and oil pump 15k miles ago.

I'm considering a b35 head, m106 transplant or just swapping in parts with what I have. Recently picked up an early Dinan turbo kit and I'm contemplating upgrades to support the requirements of the turbo. Just looking for advice and recommendations regarding which direction to go. Looking for performance obviously but also need reliability. 8-12 psi boost with ~350-375 hp would be adequate for my needs.

I'm also running: Miller WAR and Gen III MAF, MSD Blaster 2 and 6-AL, TRE 255lph inline and new Bosch in-tank fuel pumps, M5 oil cooler and filter head and misc other goodies that will need to be upgraded for boost.

With what I have and my goal of a streetable/reliable driver which route should I pursue?

Thanks for the help!
