1985 BMW M5

Post by marek »

1985 BMW M5, sable brown on checkered brown interior, AC converted to R134a, PW, glass sunroof, factory brown tinted glass, imported from Germany previously owned by Greek diplomat (1993-2008). Just under 227k km (142k miles). Car is registered and plated in Ontario. Last 7 of VIN 1018165

Good:

Overall in great condition with clean body and interior, no mods and lots of work done at BMW dealer with receipts in the last 15k km including entire suspension (everything incl. shocks), new tires, no SLS (as it’s an early euro car), great color and interior, really clean and well taken care of. Drives great and has no idle or other issues.

Bad:

NOT FEDERALIZED for US folks, AC needs to be recharged, wheels are not hubcentric so there is a shimmy (I tried a borrowed set that is hubcentric and shimmy was gone. I will try to get the rings from tirerack). 1.5” round worn through spot on D/S seat outside bolster (the seat cover is still available new in Germany from BMW, I checked this when I was there in July ‘08), spoiler is missing one of the tow hook covers, also available in Germany from BMW. Oil level sensor is defective (shows oil level warning on first turn, but dipstick shows full)

I’m moving to a condo, getting married and am really busy at work so I would like to sell this or my ’92 M5T as I don’t have enough parking spaces and would prefer not to be paying to store the car elsewhere. I don’t have to sell it for financial reasons so I will not respond to lowball offers. I had this car listed earlier this year for a friend who was selling it in Germany, I bought it as I couldn’t pass it up when I saw it in person in July.

Asking $19k CDN obo. I am negotiable within reason as I would like to move this quickly before moving in 2 weeks.

WOW! Sable brown?!?!?! I have never seen this color on a euro car. We only had that color available with the 528e. I can't wait to see the pics! Good luck with the sale-your price seems very reasonable considering what the Euro/Dollar difference is today.

That car is awesome! I'd drool all over those those seats and brown dash if I had the chance of sitting in it! Good luck with the sale!

Edit: You have this very rare M5 AND the uber rare E34 M5 touring?!?!?! I'm sooooo jealous! I can't imagine what your daily driver is!

This is quite interesting. Ron, I would love to see you restore this car to its former livery (no pressure). The Sable Brown/ Nutria Highland cloth is amazing.

Best,

Really? Mine has it, but I have comfort seats and no lovely cloth inserts to offset the brown. This is however the only other e28 i've seen with the interior even close to mine. Makes me wish i had sports seats.

Nice car mate, really dig the sleeper status.

Good luck for the sale!

You guys can import and wait can't you? Our rules don't even allow a car across the border if it doesn't meet the 15 year rule, but I though you could import one and store it until it was either exempt from Federalization rules (25 years old) or Federalized.

Think of what you could do with this car with 2 years in the garage! Plus the Canadian dollar has slipped = bargain.

I'm not certain, but I think you can do this as long as you don't want to register the car for use on public roads. But I think the loop hole that allows this is for special purpose or unique cars. I don't know if a E28 M5 would be allowed into that classification.

Is this the car that came from Hanover? I think the one from Hanover was gray. I remember seeing it last year parked on a Hanover street not far from the zoo.

If I didn't already have one I'd definitely be interested. I'll ask around the Ottawa area for you.

Wow almost no interest. Please check what they go for in Europe and then you'll see that my car is an absolute bargain.

Your price is really fair for someone in Canada. The problem stateside is Federalization which at this point is around $8000, then add shipping and it becomes out of reach for many. If there was some way to get the car without having the expenditures it would truly be a bargain. It is an extremely rare car, color, and interior. It's a shame all the crap has to be done to satisfy the Feds.

If I were in the market.......... I would buy it, drive it across the border and leave it in the garage for another year and 4 months, and then register it.

Ontario isn't all that far from St. Paul Minnesota.

Well, Ontario is bigger than Texas, but I get your point.

Ron, would an '85 be that much? My understanding is that the EPA standards are waived at 21 years, which should make it somewhat cheaper. Of course, it also depends on each state's laws regarding emissions.
