I like the lipo/euro look, but would never do it myself. I drive into San Francisco too often, and the NA bumpers are incredibly practical there :P I don't mind the way they look - I think that older Mercedes bumpers are alot uglier.

I have given serious consideration to putting a spring around the bumper shock after the lipo, use a pin and cable like a hood pint o define the max forward travel distance, then the coil spring will give it some bounce for in city use......Anyone have access to springs of that size?

McMaster-Carr shows a number that are large enough. It's not just the "spring" that makes the difference -- it's the energy dissipation by the shocks.

That is true, but a little spring back is better than nothing I think....
And those springs at McMaster are Pricey....woooooo

Dude, I am new to this thread but just read through it.... Yes, E28'ers could be dicks, but none came off as a bigger one than yourself... If you are new to a community, best bet is usually to ignore the people who bother you and keep your negative comments to yourself.. Especially since you may not know who is most influential and could possibly give you the most help in the future... I didn't see any serious personal attacks until after you bit back... I usually don't comment on things like this, but from an outsiders view of this thread... You made yourself look really bad.. Maybe I am just used to the grammar corrections and helpful E28 factoids that are sometimes bluntly given, but damn... Your reactions were horrible!!! I am not holding this thread against you in anyway, I hope that you can redeem yourself and hopefully be a great contribution to this site.. The people here are all great guys and have huge hearts, they just like to correct people when they see something wrong.. Welcome to the site and hopefully you will give everybody another chance!! Good luck on your E28 adventures!!
thanks..i guess? ill let ppl walk over me for now

You just don't get it. You seem to insist that someone has to win and someone has to lose here. So now you're going to play 'loser'. It is not those you have been abusing who need to grow up. It's you.

If you figure out how to stop feeling sorry for yourself, you can become a member of this community because we are a pretty forgiving lot. But if you think you can make 'nice' while thinking to yourself that most of us are assholes, that won't work because, believe me, you're just not clever enough to pull it off.

I will join the others who strongly suggest that you try to fit in because, IMHO*, you are not going to find a more valuable resource for the E28 than this very group. It is not merely a cyber-group of people who have never met, like so many others you see online. This is a cohesive bunch of actual face-to-face friends who have a travelling feast called 5er Fest that you have apparently just missed in Chattanooga. Hopefully, you can make it next year and share beers with us. Or meet some of the guys who have regional wrenchfests and get togethers to work on their E28s or just to be friends with a common interest.

I crashed my E28 yesterday and already, I have offers to send me at the cost of shipping all the parts I need to fix my car. You are not gonna find that at any of the other E28-dedicated boards except from the guys who are already here. My bottom line advice is, lose the attitude and treat us as you would your friends instead of the counter jerk at AutoZone. [Apologies if you are the counter jerk at AutoZone. ;) ]

* Said opinion formed with my background as an active 22-year BMW CCA member in 3 different chapters, chapter officer, member of at least 3 other E28 cyber-boards, veteran of 7 BMW CCA Oktoberfests and (unfortunately only) two 5er Fests, and an 8-year E28 owner. I am also the #3 Post Whore© here, so you are not gonna avoid me any more than you will avoid Shawn D (at #1). But neither of us is too vindictive if you have any willingness at all to get along.

believe me, i understand where your coming from, so far, this site has worked out, and i do want to make friends here, and i do understand your position as an e28 owner, im not here to fool around and make enemies, i want to become an expert with this car. i just have 0 tolerance with rude, pointless comments, anywhere, i dont take it lightly. ive been like that all the time. im not taking stabs at him because im on a rage here, its because i treat others the way they treat me, newbie or not.
i totally understand you, and i would fit in a lot better if people just stopped, thought about how their comments effect the next person, and then post. im sure you do that as well. i probably would because then i wouldnt be saying bad things about people. sure, i probably did seem like an asshole with the comments ive posted, they way i reposted is just reflecting on how the first comment seemed to influence me. thats all, im not a mean person, and i want to keep it that way

technically im not a newbie, maybe with e28's but everything else, im not, basically. my dad strictly works on european cars, mostly bmws, has been awarded bmw factory service award in 1990 along with many many other factory serive programs, such as audi and porsche. and also was an herb chambers mechanic for at least 15 years, owns his own shop nowadays. been working with him for a rather long time. started working with my e28 a year back, so maybe im a newbie in that sense* jsut thought youd like to know, since you shared apart of your history

my family has had this car for 15 or so years, sat for 3, revived, sat for 2, revived lol. have no clue who previous owner ever was, . im not trying to brag about how long ive owned an e28 ;) believe me, yours is in a hell of a lot better condition than mine, that says a lot. i appreciate your comments about my behavior though

Damn! You guys are REALLY putting this guys dick in the dirt. Everyone wants to get their special stab in.
Just let it go already, save him a shred of his dignity and if he acts up again he truly deserves it.
I never even saw this kind of behaviour at Roadfly.
This thread is NOT an example of the goodness this forum is known for. If you corner a chipmunk he will tear your lungs out. What's the guy supossed to do?
Take the high road guys your all bigger & better than that.
My uncalled for 2 cents

SERIOUSLY...this thread went from a very informing thread that could really help people considering bumper lipo to a totally useless thread second only to ANY THREAD that M635csi posts on.

Thats not true and you know it. You really should back off of that guy. I haven't seen anything recently that he has been out of line on.

I couldn't agree more. I was not around for the great wheel injustice though did archive and read a good portion of it during the evermore common trend of never letting him forget it. It seems a complicated series of events that onlookers will never know the absolute truth about. Remember, nearly all truths are only mildly subjective at best. ;)

I'll go further out on a limb and say that I have enoyed PM's with Chris and feel short of this one incident he is a devoted and knowledgeable participant in the BMW community and ultimately wishes to share and exchange information. :D

To his further detrement when provoked he typically delivers a witty lashing to the aggressor which only incites this continual confrontation and tilling of the past.

All in all I think everyone should back off. Given the 'band wagon' harassment I think he has been a pretty good sport.

I'm with skip and option on this one...you'd have to use the archives to argue AGAINST them...

The check's in the mail for someone's defense of this one...

Let me explain a few things about post timeliness for you.

First, the thread you dredged up here is, what, a year old or more? It's usually better to leave them dead where they are unless you have something very relevant and very important to add to them. We discussed it then and we're done now. Start a new thread.

Second, Terry posted that message either at about the same time, or shortly after, you had started to 'redeem' yourself in other threads as well as in this one. Let it go. Better yet, prove him wrong, but in the process, don't take too much extra effort to defend yourself. That's exactly what he, and some people, are expecting of you, so disappoint them by being above it. W.C. Fields said it best in the film "Go West":

"Ignore 'em, m'dear. They're beneath our dignity." ;)
