After exhaustive searching I’ve found these numbers for North American spec cars produced.
1985: 1,847
1986: 1,759
I also found this for official sales data which doesn’t list the model year only how many were sold each month. The total for 524td’s comes to 3,635 units which leaves us with a 29 car discrepancy. I own a US Spec 1984 MY 524td’s. This data suggests there may be 28 more ‘84’s, or possibly some ‘87 MY cars. Does anyone else have an 84 or 87 North American Spec car?

That 29-car gap is definitely intriguing—your ‘84 is a rare find. Would be interesting to see if others have ‘84 or possibly ‘87 MY 524tds to help fill in the mystery.

After doing more research, I found that 30 North American vins were allocated for the 1984 model year 524td. Of those 30, only 1 has an actual build sheet and that is the 30th vin. So my car is a 1 of 1 1984 MY North American 524td. Beyond that, I would need to run a build sheet for every single vin to see what the exact number of units built was. Me and a couple colleagues started doing this to get exact production numbers, options and colors for a few of the North American diesel models. 740ld’s were completed we are doing 540d’s next (both are single model year cars with under 500 units total). Beyond that we planed to do F31 328d wagons and possibly E28 524td’s next. But it all costs time and money.
the exact vin allocation for 524td’s was 3,773. Of those bmw sales data has 3,635 sold, and bmw na claims 3,606 (85 and 86 were made). Factoring in the 84 that list is at 3,607. Eventually when I run every vin, I’ll know which were built and can build a spread sheet with colors and options. My car has 2 options, sunroof and option code 910 for research vehicle.
