The Thread of Randomness. . .
Re: The Thread of Randomness. . .
My birthday party went pretty well last night. Really going to suck turning 40 next year.
I'm missing most of my left big toenail but at least I won the 100yd foot race! Neighbor left her car because she couldn't find the keys that were in her husbands pocket who was asleep in the hatch. Went to the store earlier for some beer and steaks and tried not to make contact with anyone. I think I may have chiggers.

Re: The Thread of Randomness. . .
Spent some time on the e28 yesterday. The throttle position sensor was way out, which could explain the stalling. I re-seated a lot of connectors and threw in a spare 059 ecu. The car is hesitant to start after sitting overnight. It has to turn over and act like it's going to catch a couple times before it actually starts. I think it's likely the check valve in the fuel pump has given up.
The idle is still low about 650, maybe the throttle plate has been messed with. Need to get a gasket and mess with that. I can understand why the PO was at his wits end, the tweaking needed to have this car running right is knowledge gained over years of time. I've been paying attention, have logged over 500k miles on a m30 so it's no problem to me- just time.
The time I spent rolling this car down the highway was pretty nice. I've put almost 70 miles on it now and it hasn't stalled once since adjusting the TPS, though I can feel the idle control valve is definitely getting a work out keeping it running. The idle needs to come up about 125rpm at idle. I've driven a 528e, a M5, and now a 535is auto. What gives with that anyway? I feel like a is should have by default a manual transmission. There's nothing sporty about a 4hp22eh behind a 182hp m30.
Don't know what I'll do with this car after I get it running right and cleaned up, maybe trade for something already done. This car has no rot in the body and that's very rare in this region. Front seats have been dyed, but they're really in good shape.

The guys in our dorm put together another rap video. Yes, this is my life; shepherding 21 chuckleheads like this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-hnvMWM2CU
But all in all, they're a pretty decent bunch of chuckleheads. I guess I'll let them come back after Christmas break.
Speaking of Christmas break, we start pushing them off to the train stations & airport tomorrow.
Half of them will be gone by the end of Friday, and we'll have the house totally emptied by Sunday.
I. Can't. Wait.
As endearing as they can be, I'm about ready to... Oh yeah. Stopped me just in time.

A good haircut can set the tone for the whole weekend.

When I start looking like Bernie Sanders, I go to a hair cutter and ask for a #4. In and out in less than 10 minutes. #4 is the guide on the electric clippers. A clean 1/4-1/2" . No muss, no fuss.Karl Grau wrote:A good haircut can set the tone for the whole weekend.

I always ask for the "Brazilion".
Re: The Thread of Randomness. . .
I'm almost afraid to ask, lest my middle class sensibilities be bruised. WTF is a Brazilian? This is the second reference I've encountered. TIA, (gulp)oldskool wrote:I always ask for the "Brazilion".

Like I said, I don't know what's worse, when I have no idea what oldskool is talking about or when I know exactly what he's talking about. I think it's about 50-50.
Re: The Thread of Randomness. . .
It's going to be bitterly cold tonight (i'm not exaggerating this time) so I'm going to make a fire and try a new chili recipe. It has some weird stuff in it but I'll try anything once.
Here's the recipe:
"As evidenced by the fact that I only used 2 poblanos and 2 red bell peppers, this is a very mild chili. You can, of course, spice it up as much as you want, but I urge caution! It has a strong, robust flavor, and it’s very well balanced. This has a multitude of subtle flavors that play off each other very well, and you’d have to really be A Idiot to build a deep, complex flavor profile, then overwhelm it with a dozen Ghost Peppers. Step lightly, friend: you’re challenging perfection.
Drinkage: C’mon: you bought at least a 6 pack of the dark beer you need for the recipe, so: 1 for the Chili, 5 for the cook!
Time: 15 minutes prep; 2 hours cooking: 2 1/4 hours total
Serves: 8 – 12 depending on bowl size. Or 3, if you have teenagers in your menagerie.
Knife skills first!
And there you are. You’ve got a wonderfully aromatic, flavor-packed, savory dish with just a bit of a spicy afterbite, perfect for a cool fall afternoon or evening with friends. The perfect pot of chili.
Ladle into bowls, garnish as desired – we used grated cheddar, sour cream, and green onions – and serve. Preferably with cornmeal muffins.
YOU’RE WELCOME."

- 2 teaspoons oil
2 onions
3 cloves garlic
1 lb lean ground beef
3⁄4 lb beef sirloin
1 (14 1/2 ounce) can stewed tomatoes
1 can dark beer
1 cup strong coffee
2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
16 oz beef broth
1⁄2 cup plus 1 tbls brown sugar
1 tbls cider vinegar
1/8 tsp cinnamon
large pinch ground cloves
large pinch allspice
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1 tablespoon cumin
1 tablespoon cocoa
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon cayenne
1 teaspoon coriander
1 teaspoon salt
Beans. I used Hambeens 15 bean soup, presoaked. If you prefer – WRONG! WEAK! LOW ENERGY! – you can use 4 (15 ounce) cans kidney beans
4 peppers – I used 2 poblano and 2 red bell peppers.
OPTIONAL:
2 each, jalapeno/habanero pepper.
Knife skills first!
- Chop the onions, mince the garlic, cube the sirloin.
Heat oil.
Saute onions, garlic and meat on medium heat until brown.
Crush the tomatoes, add beer, coffee, tomato paste and beef broth.
Bring to low boil
Add spices and peppers
Add beans. If being lazy, stir in 2 cans of kidney beans
Bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 1 1/2 hours
If being lazy, stir in the other 2 cans of kidney beans. Either way, taste, adjust spices, and simmer another 30 minutes.

Re: The Thread of Randomness. . .
Yum Similar 1 pot dinner. A can of lentil soup or pinto beans simmering dump in frozen vedgies . Meantime nuke a cubed potato, a carrot , onion whatever. nuke until soft. Use crushed red pepper for heat. If using pinto beans use cumin and oregano. meat can be ground, chopped meat or sausage, pork chicken, or none, whatever. Sort of a cassoulet. Thats what I've been making for dinners when home alone. Lately I cook singing to old Stones Oh who's to blame, the girl is just insane.. Its great not having neighbors.
My corn bread starts with bacon in a skillet ,heating in an oven.. whole kernel corn ,peppers. Let the stuff in the fridge be your food.

That's the overnight forecast for Dec.16-17. Real temps, no wind chill. I'm not there, but definitely am not missing home much this weekend.
Re: The Thread of Randomness. . .
Eh, he's just a wimp. National Weather Service shows his street down to 46F tonight. Now up here in NorCal where I am, it's down to 31F already, so it might get down to the mid 20s by dawn. Brrrrr. Now that's cold! There ought to be a law. Uh, yes, that is +20s, not -20s.davintosh wrote:Define "bitterly cold".Karl Grau wrote:It's going to be bitterly cold tonight (i'm not exaggerating this time) so I'm going to make a fire and try a new chili recipe. Now I feel like a wimp for not wanting to go outside the other day, when it got down to around 30F or so.
Re: The Thread of Randomness. . .
I'm in Ft. Worth. Yesterday mid-day it was 72. By the time we walked out of graduation at about 3 it was 20.

Yup... those are LEDs on the brake black-plates. All four corners were so adorned.

Making grilled cheese sammiches are way better served with sharp cheddar vs. Slice "cheese".
