St Paddy's Day 2016 - 15th Anniversary! O'Fishel Thread

Post by wkohler »

Having just recovered from the thirteenth event in 2014, it's time to start making your plans to join us in San Diego, California for the 15th St. Paddy's Day Gathering! Recovery from the fourteenth event will likely happen sometime in mid-February depending on metabolism. The dates this year for our festivities are Friday and Saturday, March 18th and 19th.

Image

A little less than 15 years ago, a person from the Phoenix, AZ area had an idea. He did what all people do when they have an idea. He went to the internet to share his idea.

http://bimmer.roadfly.com/e28/messages/ ... 97844.html (Roadfly will suddenly get a bunch of traffic and not know why...)

Resulting from that idea and the plan put into motion, this happened:

Image

Everyone got together in San Diego to take a photo. Then everyone left.

After fourteen years, the basic concept has stayed the same though many of the players have changed.

Our plan this year is to do what we usually do and start here:

Image

That looks like this while we're in it:

Image

Until this happens:

Image

When Yar doesn't work for us, we send in Vince.

Image

With that sure to get us kicked out, we will head here:

Image

We will be all so excited, we can hardly contain ourselves.

Image

Excited?

As said before, there's a pre-party on Friday evening. Here's a map showing roughly where all of the festivities will be.

Image

For the out-of-towners that wish to join us, there are lots of lodging options within a reasonable distance of all three locations. When booking a reservation, please inform the desk that you're in town for the St. Paddy's Day BMW event. If you let them know that and present other eligible discounts, you should get a break on the room rate.

Both Darin and Charles have been very generous with their homes for hosting both the Friday (Charles) and Saturday (Darin) parties. Please be prepared to provide a donation which goes towards reimbursing them for the money THEY spend so we can all have fun. There will be a box at the event for this. In addition to one of the largest selections of "adult beverages" this side of a liquor store, we usually have some great food as well, so it's a worthwhile donation.

Just a quick recap:

The dates this year for our festivities are in March. They are Friday and Saturday, March 18th and 19th.
The Friday party is at Karl Grau's house. The start time is generally once people start arriving, which traditionally has been sometime in the late afternoon.
The meet at Mission Bay starts at about 9am. It ends when they threaten to bring in the tow trucks.
Image
After that's over, we head to MLastovo's house where the festivities often continue into Sunday (the 20th).

That should cover the basics and GUMBALL.

Is that a public course in the middle of the map? Tecolote? Do golf clubs ever make an appearance at this gathering?

Yes, Tecolote is public and there's also Mission Bay Golf Course (very left side of that map). Tecolote green fees are $20.00 with rental clubs for $25. Mission Bay green fees are $25.00 resident and $29.00 non-resident.

I think we need to get the Oracle of Phoenix a hat and cape.

Golf on Friday afternoon sounds good. Highest score wins, right?

Shit Yeah! I'm down, except I call it "gof"... without the "L", like the Captain of the Links at St. Andrews from Scotland.

I'm up for golf depending on how much I get done on Thursday and it IS highest score wins. I will also have to send my hat to the dry cleaners so I'm looking my best.

When The Oracle of the Desert posted this thread last night I started freaking out because I realized that I hadn't put in for time off from work yet. If two or more people in my group already had it off, I was FOOKED. My boss let me sweat until the end of the day but all is well. :)

Ah, a new year, a new car event season to start. I'm in, of course.
Emailing to Chas for my reservations.

As usual, the I will host the NorCal crew this year for lunch, stretch and a leak. Where is TBD (although likely the Chez Hangar again).

Thanks heaps to the Merry-Makers: Chris, Chas and Darin.

Oh and...GUMBALL!

Ok, I got a small sampling of some of the West Coast crew in LA a couple weeks ago and it's high time I get to know some more of you guys. And preferably get drunk with a bunch. A plane ticket has been bought and a hotel room has been reserved. In that we finally got a taste of winter in the Northeast this week, I'm gonna say it can't come too soon.

I'll definitely play golf on Fri. Given the proposed rule set, I'd say you're all in for a challenge. I like the looks of that one over near the water. And gambling is illegal at Bushwood.

I'm SO there.
In fact, I made hotel reservations Monday, about 1/2 a mile up the street from the Sat AM meet spot.
2 Queens...
Now I just have to decide which heap to bring.

You said the tow trucks were invited, right?

Any talk of a caravan this year? Hopefully with fewer/and/or shorter stops? The whole 'leave the house at three for an early start' was kind of silly in my case :D

What hotel might that be?
I will need to book a hotel as well. I remember looking for one close to the areas of late night shenanigans, but there didn't seem to be much around there.

Red Roof Inn
4545 Mission Bay Dr.

I know, I know. But they said "free pets", so I'm actually going to woof at the front desk and hope for the best.
I now use a CPAP, so I won't bother the neighbors OR my roommate... I can't help the shedding, though.

I also checked, and they have pre-positioned oil spots in the parking spaces. That's a plus.
Those are both within staggering distance of restaurants at opposing ends of the spectrum.

One is a Sushi House that you have to have a reservation AND a Platinum Card to eat at... Think my AAA Card will work?
The other is Rubio's, which has TERRIFIC tacos and schtuff like that. You'll have to stagger across 4 lanes of traffic to go there and back...
Nothing on the order of that one place near Darin's that we kept open for an hour past closing last year... (Their rolled tacos were good, though)

I've found the accommodations quite rewarding at Chez Chas. The acoustics in the bathroom could use some work and someone may or may not have peed in the office trash can. 3*** -stars and a swirl.

Since it’s the 15th anniversary edition, I thought it would be cool to get as many of the original attendees as possible back this year. Unfortunately, at least one of the class of 2002 has passed away (RIP Robbie) but I’m trying to I.D. the rest of the group.

I see;

Raj
Mark
Robbie (RIP)
Wayne(?)
Tony T (unless he was the one taking the picture)
John SoCal Desert (?)
Ross M
John SCB
Brian K with his little boy. (BTW, the boy got his driver’s license last year )
Pedro

I recognize some faces who's names are escaping me at the moment.

Top row: Raj, Tony W., Steve, Mark B., Robbie (RIP), Jerry, Marco, dunno, Brian in SB?, John SoCal Desert, dunno, dunno, Darin, Charles, dunno,
Next row: Ron in OC, Ross, John SCB, Brian with son, Tony T, Jim B, Pedro, dunno x3.

George, You had mentioned perhaps meeting up in Vegas, but I'm thinking that route through the mountains in March would be ill-advised for me. Routing through Albuquerque/Phoenix seems like a better option. Anyway I cut it, seems like only a couple hours difference. I have made many trips east from here, but not the western leg to California. I will take your recommendation for routing through the desert lands.

I'm glad you brought that up. I'm coming out several days early so our timing inbound will be off. Yeah I forgot about March is still winter in CO and southern UT. If you are coming down I-25 to ABQ, I'd look at the WX. If its severe clear on I-40 to Flagstaff, I'd go that way and turn south to Phoenix then onto I-8. I've had it snow on me in Flagstaff as late as May

You could bypass Flagstaff and turn south on 77 at Holbrook, connect with 260 to Payson and take 87 down to Mesa, pick up Loop 202 and that will take you right on to 10 West.

I've taken that route in the summer. Great drive except for a stretch for about 30 miles outside of Payson. Narrow road with limited passing. Probably not as much traffic in the winter as summer.

That is basically what Google maps is telling me except to take 377 to 260 and then 85 down to I-8. Do you jump down to 8 or run 10 across further?

Thanks for the help!
