They're overrated. Slowly tighten the lug bolts and it'll come out as good or better than the rings I've used. Run one down tight with them on and it'll feel like you're driving oval wheels. This was good advice. Although it didn't solve the problem, it made it better. Ultimately I just had to reverse the rotation, that worked, but I'm probably going to have to pay close attention to the rear wheels when I change the rubber. One may need some loving, although I don't believe it was on my watch.Mike W. wrote:They're overrated. Slowly tighten the lug bolts and it'll come out as good or better than the rings I've used. Re: The Thread of Randomness. . .
One of the guys I'm working with needed to borrow a drill today, so I lent him the one that was purchased by one of my predecessors, and old-style corded hammer drill. After I hand it to him, he pulls the chuck key out and says, "What's this?" I was a little dumbfounded, but I guess he's young enough that he may never have seen a drill without a keyless chuck before. I'm feeling old again.

Picking up a 88 635 5 speed in the morning with 102k miles. This is my 6th 6. http://nashville.craigslist.org/cto/5266103322.html
The ad was so generic I had to call. Guy says he was in the midst of doing some work to the car, 3 years ago. It's going to take a lot of hours getting it put back together, but should be a very nice car once it's done. I went and looked at it and bought it within 15 minutes. Car has zero rust and doesn't look like it's been jacked up under the rocker panels. Luckily a friend is going to help me out towing it the 190 miles home. I couldn't find a tow company to do it for less than $700, most places wanted around $900.

Re: The Thread of Randomness. . .
You need AAA Premier. 1 x 200 mile tow a year. I haven't used MINE this year, but I used my WIFE's.... eh? eh? *nudge nudge wink wink*86GT635 wrote: Luckily a friend is going to help me out towing it the 190 miles home. Re: The Thread of Randomness. . .
You can't use AAA for that. They will bill you an exorbitant amount for the tow. Much more (nearly twice) than if you had just called a tow truck. They have really started to crack down on the people misusing the membership.

For picking up a car that you just bought? (because it's not registered/titled in your name?)wkohler wrote:You can't use AAA for that. They will bill you an exorbitant amount for the tow. Re: The Thread of Randomness. . .
I was talking to a guy in CA who used it a few times to move cars around. He might not have owned all of them. They sent him a $2200 bill and said if he didn't pay it, they'd cancel his membership. A couple of local guys were denied service because the car was at someone else's house and had clearly not just broken. It might have run when parked, but you know the drill. In those cases, the drivers wouldn't do it so I gave them the guys I use.
Re: The Thread of Randomness. . .
My goodness that was a long/memorable day. Had a good time and the car made it home. I gave my friend $400, and bought him a nice steak. Which is a pretty good deal, we ran through about $120 in gas, plus the wear/tear on the truck/trailer. It was fun finding a replacement 185/70r14 tire in the middle of nowhere Ky, because one of the tires on the tandem axle trailer let go on the interstate. Used 3 ratchet straps to support the empty side for a few miles. 14" tires are like dinosaurs now, but luckily we were 5 miles from Dinosaur world, in Cave City Ky. Shout out to Rogers tire service.

Re: The Thread of Randomness. . .
That sucks. I've had a tough year, so I've used my AAA more than I've wanted to. (Three separate tows for the 1600 if my memory serves, damn shakedown mileage) I'm always very clear with the operators, and we've spoken money several times, but it's never come to that. I'm due for renewal very soon, so we'll see if my rate goes up or they refuse to renew. But I've been premier since 2011, and have left many service calls on the table, so I don't feel as if I've abused the service.wkohler wrote:I was talking to a guy in CA who used it a few times to move cars around. Re: The Thread of Randomness. . .
Didn't know you had a 1600, do you have a thread somewhere for it?
Re: The Thread of Randomness. . .
Using it to tow a broken car you were driving that belongs to you is what it's for. Using it to tow a car that you just bought isn't.
