What did you do to your E28 today?

Ordered a new Boysen muffler (Cat-back) that will arrive next Thursday.

Attempted to prioritize all of the work my car needs. Still working on that. Priorities right now are:

--replacing the shot Bosal muffler with some OEM goodness

--addressing the steering vagueness issues -- some debate on how best to do that from reading old threads, but I know now it will likely involve replacing a few steering components, as well as tightening the nut on the steering column and maybe adjusting the screw on the steering box
--related: taking my tires and rims down a size to 16's

Then on the upgrades and nice-to-have list:

--finding a good upgrade chip
--maybe swapping in a 3:46 LSD
--getting estimates for treating some of the minor fender rust spots on my car

Fun never ends...

Worked on the '85 yesterday with a pro mechanic friend, in the shop with heat & lift!
Tackled the front strut inserts, upper strut bearings, UCAs, tie-rods, dog bones, oil change, alignment, valve adjustment, and a new rear ABS sensor. ABS light is now out, so ready for annual state safety inspection!

Nothing.

Recently changed trans fluid to redline, replaced trans mounts. replaced trunk seal, changed plugs, coolant reservoir, coolant. Foglight bulbs.

installed a new alternator (bigger m20 style instead of baby m20 alternator)

took center console out, fixed all wiring, connected all circuits correctly, removed radio for a hidden install later.

I decided that, due to the abundance of (performance) chips on the market, I'd be much better off if I knew how many pins my ECU chip was. So I removed the ECU (which was pathetically disassembled before I got to it, and whoever hung it back up made it look like crap) took it all apart, and low and behold, it had 28 pins. Then I reassembled it in the correct manner with all of the tabs locking and everything in place right. Then I actually hung it up with the screw holes that were intended for it. Sweet. Now lets find a chip.

- checked cylinder compression; 7.5 to 8's across the board
- new spark plugs
- continued the incredibly rewarding task (sigh) of cleaning 26 years of engine bay build up
- installed new distributor rotor; reinstalled distributor cap and wires
- ate a delicious apricot-almond pie made by a local Persian bakery; was skeptical of the flavor combination at first, but they know what they're doing!

Used it to jump start the Rat so I can drive down town and buy 7 gallons of diesel to heat the house with. That will tide us over until the oil man comes. Later on we will drive BBS to the daughter's house.

Best thing to do on Dec 25, you ask?
Why, continue tune-up / general maintenance on a newly purchased e28, of course!

- replaced front pads; calipers seem sticky after pumping brakes...concerned :/
- replaced air filter with some Mahle goodness; re-installed MAF and airbox after some cleaning
- took the car off jack-stands for the first time since purchase

- went to work at a hospital lab after enjoying some artisan corn chips dipped in left-over fondue. Mmmmm, I can feel my arteries clogging as we speak.

wired up my radio to hide away in my glove box.

it works, what a suprise.

just gotta tie up the odds and ends, get the wiring nice and tight and build a frame for the head unit to sit in.

3 gauges are going in the head units place and one volts gauge is going where the clock used to be.

Finally ponied up for a floor jack and some steel ramps. Jack stands next -- didn't like what I was seeing at Harbor Freight so I'm gonna order some on the 'ol webs...

As a bonus, a guy in an E39 M5 parked next to my little old '86 535i at HF, and when I came out with my wares he was there giving me the thumbs-up on my ride

Had to return the compliment. Not the first time something like that has happened in the short time I've had the car, but it never gets old.

Also got a very reasonable estimate on my fender and rocker panel rust cleanup from a nearby family-owned body shop in Rockville. Was checking out their other work sitting on the lot and it looks pretty good.

Plus, I drove my E28 around all morning and it ran smoothly. All in all a very productive start to the day!

Got my 535i back from the mechanic today and got it on the road for the first time in over 10 months! My dad drove it home with me following him in the 528e, his exhaust smelled like fish

Made a mount for the back of the shifter console, installed a driveshaft, diff flanges, axles and tried bleeding the brakes only to find out someone needed some used brake pads, so I then "rebuilt" the calipers and will grab some pads at the yard tomorrow.

Yesterday, tried in vain to track down whatever is draining the battery overnight. Didn't find it, but I did fix a couple of other things that were bugging me on the car, so it wasn't a total loss. It was cold out there too.

Today i got a load of tools ready to go digging around behind the dash to determine why my heater blower had stopped working, when a little lightbulb went off in my head to check the fuse.

So... Today, i replaced my header blower fuse.
